  • TRMR Review

At the weekend I picked up one of the new TRMR impact grenades and thought I would do a side by side comparison with my older Dynatec impact grenade.

    First impressions:
The TRMR is really well made, simple to use (even compared to the dynatec) and solid, in fact its a lovely piece of engineering. Its a little heavier than the dynatec and a little longer but the same diameter, so it fits nicely into a 40mm grenade pouch and really nicely in the hand.

    Testing
I was at a woodland site so thought it would be ideal to put the new toy through a bit of torture test in an environment that they really don't work well in.

    Drop Angle
First of all standard drop tests, now everyone with a dynatec knows that if they land perfectly on their side they don't go off every time, so this was the first test on some nice firm ground. As predicted the dynatec failed if dropped from waist height on its side, however the TRMR went off every time at every angle I could drop it, even when dropped from knee hieght, I could not get the TRMR to misfire on good ground dropping at anything above knee height.

    Soft Ground
Next test was to see how each grenade managed on soft ground, so starting with the softest ground I could find (wet leaves covering soft ground), neither grenade would go off at any angle even when dropped from shoulder height. I kept trying slightly harder ground until one of the grenades fired, and the TRMR was the first to go, I then tried the dynatec again a couple of times before it also went off. Both grenades do need solid ground to fire.

    Ease of use
There really isn't much in this one, but the TRMR is just a little better having no pin. For those that haven't seen the video's on youtube the TRMR doesn't use a pin at all, you twist the the top end of the grenade to make it live and release the wobble head, once the grenade has been used you twist to make it safe and continue the twisting motion to unscrew the lower cap that holds the cartridge (in my case a shotgun primer, but 9mm is also available). Reload and replace the lower and you're ready to go again. The only difference between this and the dynatec is the need to replace the pin in the dynatec before unscrewing the cap to reload. Like I said theres not much in it, but the lack of a pin is certainly a bonus for me.

    Overall
For me the TRMR is just about edges out overall for build quality, ease of use and reliability. The icing on the cake will be when I cant try out the quick release coupling on the base of the TRMR as this will make it even quicker to deploy when needed. Even as it is the TRMR is now the first grenade I pick up when I want a BFG with the dynatec in the pouch behind now.

They are phenomenal bits of kit. The fact that you can put a QD sling loop on your rig somewhere and hang them from that is awesome too, but my personal favourite is to put one either end of a two point sling and pretend I'm playing gears of war (not against people though!)
