  • G and G G96 Review

Righto this will be quite a short review due to the short time period in which I had this particular piece. I am afraid i did not take photos of this piece when I had it as I literally had it for a total of 1 week, I will explain why below.

I bought this piece as i was under the impression it is extremely similar to the KJ works M700/Tanaka M700 series of rifle, yes I know its in a almost L96 style body but thats literally as far as similarities to the L96 series this one goes, same could be said about the similarities to the KJ works and Tanaka series but for different parts.

Anyway I got this piece as I have been looking for a sniper again for a while and wanted something that was a gas one, this is due to me being left handed, I find it far too awkward pulling a bolt back on the regular VSR and L96 range of snipers and this one works similarly to real steel, bolt pull is light. I also went for this one as mentioned before this was supposedly similar to the M700 range but with a few key "upgrades" one being the power bolt by g and g, this is a good part made mostly of steel, the magazine also has a steel striker plate and the barrel is of the tightbore variety. All these parts sound promising to me so i went for it.

So to begin with when I got the rifle I pulled the upper receiver out which holds the barrel, trigger mechanism, hop unit and bolt. This part feels very well made the metal is nice. The barrel is tapered and rounded at the end, the hop slider (lets call it that) is nice and responsive similar to the KJ works version, the power bolt feels very nice and stiff, and the trigger mech is pretty decent too, its pretty much identical to the KJ works one I had in the past.

All the moving parts, bolt, trigger, bolt removal latch, safety, hop slider all moved solidly and had very little wobble. I took the lower receiver out, this is made of a rather thick plastic with nice paint on it, this part I immidiately noticed seam lines all the way down the centre of the rifle, a real big seam line, not very nice really but its not that important.

So onto putting this rifle together the upper and lower screw together at two points, one at the back of the upper receiver just behind the bolt and one about halfway down the tapered barrel. I screwed the rifle together and noticed something odd, when screwing this together, due to the tapered barrel and due to the barrel also being freefloat from the body, its very easy to overscrew the barrel to the body and cause it to not be in line with the rest of the body, not a good design I know its suppose to be freefloat, but to me there is no need for this in airsoft, I would rather have the barrel fixed to something on several points to increase its durability hell most people with VSRs use barrel spacers to stop the inner barrel from having movement. but yes this was interesting.

Next I filled up the magazine including a rather chunky piece of metal with a 15 round capacity, loaded it with gas, and then entered it into the magwell, moved the bolt forward to load the first round and "BANG" it just shot all by itself! Did I pull the trigger by accident? lets try that again, so I moved the trigger all the way to what I would have thought its starting position should be and again it shot off by itself what is going on? Lets try something else. I pulled the bolt out and the magazine to have a look and could not see anything peculiar, cycled the bolt a few times without the magazine inserted works fine as it should. After putting the magazine in again the same thing occured, I thought lets try and make the trigger less sensitive! A feature I knew was on the KJ works M700, done this made it less sensitive and still this gas rifle would slam fire and occasionally actually load and fire a shot!

It must be noted that this was down to a manufacturing defect before anyone decides to claim I was doing it wrong as the bolt was correctly lubed, inserted and fired (sounds so wrong) each time.

I took it to a game day as I thought I had sorted the problem then on the range another problem everytime it did decide to fire it would fire extremely slowly and on top of that it would fire straight off to the left, seriously what is up with this thing. After taking the bolt out you are able to see straight down the inside of the barrel a pretty useful feature IMO! The hop did not look like it was out of place everything seemed normal! At this point I decided to send this back, I aint fiddling with a rifle that is basically inoperable from the get go.

It turns out from the retailer that the upper and lower receiver were not matching up correctly, so when the bolt was inserted it was not in line with the bolt catch and in turn would not be in line with the magazine, which would cause occasional slam firing, occasional non firing, inconsistant FPS readings and inconsistant trajectories which were also caused by the hop in this which was as the retailer stated pushed far too far inside the hop chamber even when turned off completely sometimes it would rise out of the hop window but it was mostly stuck in there.

Basically all the tolerances where completely off, the hop unit in this is just not worth it, it looks like its a bad attempt at an R Hop as its a piece of rubber that is literally inserted into the hop window that is then pushed on by a single point screw. To me this is the second G and G piece I have bought, I have worked on a few different guns by G and G from a Combat machine (worse internals than a Sportline CA, better externals than CA sportline and ICS sportline) a M14 which was just the worst to work on and suffered from the same internal faults as a Combat machine (the internals were basically the same bar the motor), a KAR98 that had the same hop problems that this one had and a top tech which was overall good quality but still not worth the money to me. It seems to me that a company that is well known for its high QC and good range of weaponary I seem to keep consistently getting the lemons and working on lemons too, from them maybe its the actual specific weapon types I get from them but I have yet to get a bad Classic Army, a bad Cyma, a bad Tokyo Marui, a bad KJ works and even a bad SRC gun it is just annoying.

Overall this is a weapon that is different, has potential to be a good sniper platform but has too many inconsistencies that need to be ironed out for it to be a great platform.

    Good points:
    Good upper receiver build quality
    G and G Power bolt
    Nice metals used
    Unique
    Tightbore barrel standard
    Trigger is responsive
    Good potential

    Bad points:
Bad quality lower receiver seam line
Tolerance fitting between upper and lower is not good and is further affected by the outer barrel being free float
The bolt release lever does not return to its original position so you could technically pull the bolt out when in loading process if not careful
Bolt does not like certain BBs (madbull 0.40g)
Hop unit, do not make it proprietary with that useless little slab of hop rubber! make it the same as the KJ works one! VSR compatible hop rubber all the way!

    Conclusion:
This rifle felt cheap to me especially after finding out the tolerance problems with it and some of the other key bad points that to me should have been ironed out in the testing stages. I want this type of rifle to be good, as it is unique and also has the potential to be great but to me it feels like a prototype and to me the fact that KJ works had built an M700 whilst it is a copy of the Tanaka it has yet to fail me, the parts in this maybe not as good quality but because thy are built to a good tolerance they all fit very well together and the bolt has yet to slam fire, the hop unit has yet to produce inconsistencies in shot pattern, I cant flaw it, for a rifle that is quite a bit cheaper it had far less problems then its more expensive competitor.
