  • No more barrel cleaning nightmares - here comes the Optirod

    Gentlemen!!
    (and ladies, naturally)

I came across this amazing invention by a chap up in't north!

Its called the "Optirod" and it pretty much solves the mahoosive headache of cleaning inner barrels on pistols, rifles and even sniperoos!!

    Airsoft_Pistol_Barrel_Cleaning_Rod-900x600-c.jpg

Essentially, instead of using the barrel rod which comes with your gats and using a piece of cloth ripped into shreads then lobbed in your barrel this nifty little tool has a hollowed out end to put a cotton wool bud in and clean your barrel with accuracy and finese!
Its even been manufactured at one end to fit into a drill so you can polish hop units or barrels if needs be :D

If you google "optirod airsoft" you'll find the retailer where it can be bought from.

Im chuffed to pieces with it and its super easy to clean all my rifles and pistols now! :D

Ideal for those barrel cleaning sessions in the field too.

    Very nice idea

I currently use filter-tips used to make cigarettes.

They are soft and about 6.3mm so fit snug and are very easily pushed down the barrel and then shot out and into the bin.

I shoot about 2 or 3 per gun before each day and they clean quick, fast and fun haha

Oh and its like 80p for a box off 200 from your local off licence

These are the ones I use:

great idea with filter tips lol, that's what I smoke (roll ups) an never even thought of it! I just tried a 'ear bud' and it seems a little too small, but with some work I think it will be a good idea, the filter tip I just shoved in to my hi capa is now neatly lodged in there, almost perfect fit, think some modifications required..

Yeah you do have to be careful with the filter-tips not getting stuck inside the hop rubber but if you push one down the barrel slowly, you can feel when it touches the hop rubber and that's when you stop and shoot

£7 for a cut of plastic with a hole in, I'm not sold, A quick alcohol rub and clean with swan filters takes only a few minutes, but maybe I'm just a cheap bastard

If you type in optirod airsoft into YouTube your also see a video from the guy who made the rod..

I must admit though when did cleaning a airsoft pistol or rifle inner barrel ever become a pain?
But hats off to the guy for designing something that makes his life easier and I'm sure he will sell enough of them..

I would rather make my own for a fraction of the price, or just stick with the methods I use now, I made my own pull through cleaning rod/string as it would do the same as the £20 ones, if on the rare times I can't use a pull through or push cleaning rod I use cleaning pellets, they are a better made cleaning material then cigarette filters and about the same price..

Each to there own though. We all have our ways on cleaning our guns don't we
            Happy shooting all.

Re: No more barrel cleaning nightmares - here comes the Optirod

              Hey Guys.....

....As you can see from my earlier comments above I currently use filter tips to clean my barrels and this works great, but after recently using the Optirod I realised it wasn't cleaning my barrels as much as I initially thought.

So I got an Optirod and did some tests to compare.

After a full cleaning with JUST filter tips, this was dirt still found on the BB after shooting a 30round mag:

So then I used the Optirod and spent about 5mins just lightly buffing the inside of my barrel and the results where amazing. This is the dirt I removed on the first use:

The barrel was like new after using maybe 2 to 3 cue tip ends and the BBs actually seemed to shoot with a much better grouping and consistent range. (Tested using a TM FN57 on Green Gas using .25s)

Who knew that a small amount of effortless cleaning using this new rod would help so much

If you google "Optirod Airsoft" you'll find the retailer where it can be bought from.

Oh and I found a lovely review on them too in this month Airsoft Action magazine:

              Go get one guys!

i normally use the normal cleaning rod with solvent degreaser followed by cleaning rod again but with metal polish and the other end of the rod into a drill, slowly polish the barrel being careful not to scratch the barrel, , then solvent clean the barrel when done to remove any residue, takes 5mins and the barrel will be super shiny and clean..

One of the disadvantages to this is the solvent degreaser and metal polish having an adverse affect on the hop rubber. In the past ive used solvent cleaner and its destroyed my hop rubber over a few months....

Doesnt happen to all rubbers though which is strange.

It all depends on what solvent you use. I use Hexane, which happily gets rid of silicone lube (most solvents do not), and i've been using it to clean rubber seals of various types on lots of different industrial machinery for a long, long time with no ill effects.

you can order it off a rather well known auction site if you can't "acquire" any from work Stu lol

totally agree, i try to stay away from the hop up when cleaning my barrel, you can depth mark the rod to stay 10mm or so away or remove the barrel from the hop entirely depending how easy it is for you given the make/model, obviously with the barrel in your hand with no hop up attached is the best way to clean/polish the barrel..
