GUIDE: How To Maximise Space In A VLTOR Modstock / Crane Stock.
7 January, 2012, 18:15
Here is a little guide on how to make the most out of your stock, allowing you to run bigger/better batteries whilst still leaving room for a MOSFET. I will be fitting a fairly high spec / big lipo battery into a G&P M4 VLTOR Sentry, which has an ASCU V1 MOSFET installed. On the down side, this mod will not allow you to adjust the stock position.
Battery Specs:
7.4v 2200mah 35C+ Lipo Battery
77A continuous / 150A burst
101.1mm x 35.5mm x 16.1mm
The first step is to ensure the MOSFET unit is going to be in the right place, I have doubled the wire back across the unit and used electrical tape to keep it in the right place. This unit needs to be fit through the body end of the stock tube to get the weapon apart, so be careful how you bundle it.
Next comes the cutting. No specialist tools are required, simpy a small hacksaw, file and knife. The window on the actual stock needs to be much wider first. The MOSFET is to sit above the battery, which lays flat on the bottom on the stock. It really is a case of just measuring around the battery and cutting, the plastic is fairly soft which helps. Also note on this side I have removed some of the holes where the teeth on the stock slot in. This is to allow the wires through.
You will also need to remove material from the end to bring it down to the level of the inside.
Put the stock back onto the tube, and set it to the setting you want it on. Remember you can't change this later so get it right! I personally prefer a fairly compact stock, so use setting 2. Once set, any stock tube in the new window you cut needs to go. The top of the tube stays, so don't just cut the end off the whole tube, only the bits you need to.
Using the hacksaw, the bolt which goes into the tube to hold it needs to be cut off flush too. With this gone, we need a new way to secure the stock onto the tube. A small tube of "no more nails" does the trick, you don't need to apply all that much. The contact areas are the top of the tube, and the remains of the block which was cut off, remember you only need to put glue as far as the stock will cover...so not the whole length of the tube! The glue says sets in 10 mins, but I found it still moved, so left mine over night. When you have it back in the right place, remove any excess, including the hole where the stock number setting is shown.
With the stock back on, the MOSFET fits up top, leaving room for the battery.
Slide the battery in, it is a tight fit but you should not force or damage the pack. If needed, see where it catches and remove the obstruction. I found the best way to set it up is as shown. The battery does not "poke out" this side, and the wires loop over as shown.
The other side sticks out much more, really showing the size of the pack we have in the small space!
Depending how tight the fit is, you may need to cut some material from the stock side. With the butt plate on, you can see how much area you can take off without it being seen from outside. As a rough guide, you can go up to the mold line in the plastic. If the sides don't go on right, have a look in the area the teeth slot in. If there is any dried glue there, a sharp knife will cut it away.
And finally, all back in one piece there is no evidence of all the modification done
Hope that helps... if you have any questions / comments just ask!

Nice mod, where did you get the stock from? it's looks like it's "Dark Earth" but i could only find a "Sand" one from the Hobby shop which is based in Asia.
Cheers, Dan

It's the G&P standard one. They call it sand. Not much difference in colour I think!
