Selling a RIF Question
16 January, 2014, 20:53
Hi there am selling my KJ Works M700 and have been contacted by a buyer who is willing to pay the full asking price
He is over 18 however he has no form of defence, when I asked if he had a valid defence he said:
Nope and have no intention of playing it in the field. Just want to use it for target practice with my own setup. (I don't shoot wildlife) it's up to you weather you want to sell it to me or not.
Is there anyway to sell the gun to him legally apart from 2 toning it?
Just wanted to make sure there's no legal way before I tell him no
Thanks

Re: Selling a RIF Question
No, you can't legally sell it to him as a RIF.
He actually doesn't need a defence, you do, since it would be you who was breaking the law by selling it, not him by buying it. To avail yourself of the defence in this case would need to be convinced that he was buying it to play airsoft with at a site with third party liability insurance. He's admitted he isn't, so you have no defence.
You can two-tone it and sell it to him as a RIF though.

Re: Selling a RIF Question
There is the very murky grey area of selling it as an air rifle......
Between 6ftlb and 11.9ftlb muzzle energy (approx 8 - 16 joules)
It is not in the "spirit" of the laws, but it is legal. RFDs have been exploiting the loophole for years.
If a customer calls over the phone, they sell it as a RIF with suitable defence.
For walk-ins they sell them as air weapons because they only need to be 18 and prove address.
Your shout though buddy.

Yeah that is a good point actually didn't think of it that way
Think I will tell him no as it's still a RIF at the end of the day
Thanks for the input

Re: Selling a RIF Question
Morally I would say that is the right way to do things.
If it fires a 6mm BB for the MAIN purpose of airsofting I think it should be classed as a RIF..... But all the while there is the blurred line between the two there will be those who work it to their advantage.
