New out fit to go with my new gun!
4 February, 2015, 18:20
Yeah its as lame as it sounds.. ;]
I have just purchased a lovely aks74n (below) and whenever i get a new gun I have to make an proper themed outfit to go with it. However I'm not massively knowledgeable on Russian combat uniforms, let alone the specific ones that fit with this rifle. I googled and got some stuff like the 6B43 armour vest, but im still not sure if thats right or what camo pattern i need to grab. Any help would be great as i like to get stuff looking sweet and authentic!

Re: New out fit to go with my new gun!
You might have to be more specific about the look you would like to go for. Regular infantry or more of an SF look? Light or heavy?
If you want to be truly authentic then really you are looking at slightly older kit to go with an AKS74. The Russian military phased them out around the mid 2000s.

True, the life of the wooden 74 was somewhat short lived.
Was the folder issued to regular infantry though? Would it be more suited to an airbourne/VDV or mechanized infantry type loadout?

Re: New out fit to go with my new gun!
Folders were largely reserved for airborne troops up until the late 80s but you do see them in the hands of scout units and of Marines somewhat earlier. By the early 90s they were pretty much standard throughout as the folding 74M was meant to be the standard issue but initial production was limited.
So you can go motor rifles scout, VDV, GRU or NI if you fancy cold war or pretty much anything up until around 2000ish. I'm a fan of cold war kit (good theme games about as well
) or the 1st Chechen war era. Kit tends to be pretty simple and not too expensive for most of it, although some can be pricey.

Hehe, sorry! There just isn't a simple answer. The best thing to do is find a picture of something you like and try to replicate it.

It can easily be done on a budget. My starting load out was a KZS suit for £30 and some RD54 webbing for £45. Job done

Re: New out fit to go with my new gun!
Indeed, i find russian kit to be incredibly cheap compared to a 'modern' loadout for a western nation (unless you're doing late 90s to 2010 DPM or flecktarn and all issue kit, even then german kit isnt cheap for webbing and helmets).
By chechynan kit cost about £100 new when i bought it (BEKAS combat suit and an M24 assault vest), cold war wise my KZS cost me about £20, my afghnaka suit about £50 and my RD 54 webbing £30. Its a case of going to shows and looking about.
I also got a cheap chinese green chicom and bleached it to khaki to make it look like a russian one from afghanistan, that was £12.
if you go 'total detail' and make sure you've got the right russian boots, t shirt etc etc it can get pricy but if you want an outer layer that looks great from ten feet away then as Fizzy says, a KZS suit, striped shirt and either an RD 54 or a belt with a mag pouch and a water bottle will give you an 'afghanistan airborne' look in general for less than £100. I've worn uk BCH boots with mine instead of soviet lace up boots and no one has ever said anything, like wise i've worn west german jackboots instead of soviet jackboots and you hav to really know your stuff to spot they are not right.
The key to cheap kit is 1. shows, 2. joining russian themed sites (not sure if i can list the main ones here) and asking people, a lot of people like me will pass on spare kit at a discount to people interested in getting involved with the cold war. and 3.... read lots, do loads of research, lurk around on non airsoft militay history forums.
If you know what *is* right its easier to use 'stand ins' that most people never notice (i do it all the time) but also when it matters (like if you're doing living history) you know what you need to buy 'first time' and dont get ripped off or persuaded by an online auction trader that 'what you really need mate is this' as they try and sell you one of their three thousands sets of susrplus ukranian police camo issued for a month in 1999 and withdrawn almost immediately

kzs (2).jpg
This is my 80s 'motor rifles recce' kit. Excluding the boots (which are the west german 1950s jackboots) it cost about £50
Belt webbing, about £20 for belt and y strap and a water bottle and one ammo pouch, lots of shopping around though
KZS about £20
Pilotka side cap about £4 (and thats only because ive got a huge head and need a hat size 60 which can be hard to find)
Respirator and bag were given to me (its actually a civilian bag not a military one) and i've not included the cost of the SVD pouch (about £15) and the bayonet (about £30) as you dont really need it in a basic impression. Its stuff you can add later.

Re: New out fit to go with my new gun!
Even modern Russian kit can be had on the cheap these days. There's a new retailer (forum rules prevent me from linking to him) who has a huge range of pukka kit at great prices, with a great service to boot.
You could do a fully up to date "polite green man" from the Crimea, including weapon, for a
lot
less that trying to look like a member of seal team 6.

Re: New out fit to go with my new gun!
All of the above is very true......
My take on the OP was "I have to make an proper themed outfit to go with it"
I'm not too sure you can do that on a budget - well not what I would call a budget anyway

Perhaps you could try to make a Russian army loadout from the war in Afghanistan.
