  • use of tablets and smart phones

Hi. Being a bit of a tech geek and with the proliferation of mobile and wearable tech, I was wondering if people thought there was a place for the use of tablets/phones on the airsoft field. Even the military is moving into civilian tech for soldiers and with apps like BattleTac being available for mapping and communication.
The Battlefield Commander app for Battlefield 4 was a good idea and allowed instructions to be sent across a virtual battlefield.
I'd like to know people's opinions on the matter. Can you see it being used in milsim events or even weekend skirmishes?

My matey and I are in technology for the emergency services and we'd actually written some software to support this and it does work! you receive a registration code and use either your device or a site device to register to a team/section/skillset and you can then send and recieve statuses, commands, waypoints etc via a central laptop at 'HQ' or from a nominated patrol lead - It's really handy when you can mark positions and directions of travel of any opfor you encounter
We've also bought drone feeds into it now - We've called it Patrol Commander
We've some sites interested in using it commercially.

Seen a few similar threads and being a tech geek myself...

Problem is for many of this tech to work you need at least a 3G signal and at many sites signal is patchy at best

Also there's the risk of taking fragile expensive tech into the field

Being in London though it's not that bad. The ideal solution would be wireless and the seed cost to be offset through site rentals and subscriptions

        But we'll wait and see

Wireless might work in something like The Mall, providing you can power your access points, but in anything like woodland it's not going to happen

Power over Ethernet would work for that, and would definitely be practical in indoor environments.

For woodland environments, it's doable, afterall there are companies that provide wifi to festivals using portable infrastructure, but it would be complex, expensive and a real security risk... Afterall, we all know there are idiots out there who shoot at anything, even when they are told not to!

I think thats a valid point. And probably the reason you dont see people using drones for recon in milsim games.
I had in my minds eye using an 8 inch tablet in a woodland scenario with decent 3g. If each member of your team had one then an app like Tactical Nav could be used to mark enemy positions etc. But I think it would be too dependent on too many things. Most sites dont offer wifi so your 3g signal would have to be really good. It would only be useful in larger settings as well I think

Thats all good, what happens when you play somewhere like the Tunnels? 4 miles of tunnels in a mountain, doubt you will have any reception! Let alone wifi
