Support gunner pouch positions??
28 July, 2016, 00:20
hey guys.
Need some wisdom.
Over the last few months I have been looking at how support gunners from various countries have their rigs/vest/pc set up.
Now I have always run a Brit style setup with the ammo pouches to the sides and nothing on front other than a holster or admin pouch.
I have noticed a lot of other countries seem to follow similar practices apart from the Americans!
It seems to be a more Navy Seal, Army ranger and marsoc thing. But they seem to completely load up their fronts and have at least one massive box mag pouch on the front along with various others. I can understand M4/radio/admin pouches, but massive box mag ones!
As a support gunner you spend a lot of time on the floor, so why bulk up in an area that you need to lay on?
Is there a reason for that?

Re: Support gunner pouch positions??
Funny, I noticed the very same thing when I was looking for inspiration on my USMC SAW Gunner loadout.
I can only guess it's because they tend not to spend too much time firing prone, but usually from behind cover, either standing or kneeling. Either that, or the front pouches are filled with foam, to keep them comfy

Cant look awesome lying on the floor, hip fire for the ooh raw
I guess they rely on speed and momentum, which is strange because thats what the assault team is for..

After talking to a U.S Marine on another forum, it turns out that its to do with the aggressive nature of the units and the fact support gunners run with the unit and not used as over watch.
So they tend to state that if you're not shooting you're moving up. so don't tend to spend much time prone.
It maybe different with other units but with the Marines they tend not to run box mags unless they have to. So they will patrol with the 100 round box mag, but the front pouch will actually be full of 200 rounds of loose link and feed it straight from the pouch under contact.
The reason for this is that with the 100 round box mag to start it makes it easier to move around with and less chance of dust or foreign objects getting in the link if fed from the pouch.
