upgrading the range n fps for a tm 417D
14 November, 2016, 11:47
hiya everyone.. been airsoft-ing for a fair bit now and gone thru a number of aeg's ( all mostly g&g at stock )
finally bit the bullet and got myself a tm 417d a short while ago and loving it. been using it a few skirmishs and notice a huge change especially on the range n fps drop when i switched from .2's to .25's... a bit disappointed with this as my g&g cqb-r was out performing the hk417d in both distance and fps on .25's.
so i decided even thro the hk417d is a good as it is stock wise.. i want it better.
never gone the upgrade route before so was hoping for any advice before i go to a gunsmiths to upgrade them.
i know that i probably just need to upgrade the barrel and maybe the hop unit and piston and that should give me a lil more range n fps.
ideally i would like it to chrono 340-ish fps on .25 with the max range possible?
any ideas guys?
thanks!!! 😍

Re: upgrading the range n fps for a tm 417D
Is it locked to semi? Reason being, 340fps on a .25 is going to put you over most site limits for an AEG (380ish on a 0.2)
Certainly the FPS on a std TM is lacking, but I'm surprised you've noticed any drop in range. Is the gun new?

Re: upgrading the range n fps for a tm 417D
Unless your CQB-R had an uprated spring from new that should only have been chrono'ing 330-340 on 0.2s.
As Fizzy said, unless you are Semi only / non CQB then 340 on 0.25s is too hot generally.
If you are lacking range as standard (i would expect stock TM AEG to be 30-40M) then there may be something simple at fault like a dirty barrel or oily/contaminated bucking even.
Clean the bucking with hot soapy / fairy liquid water and dry. Wad out / brake cleaner out the barrel.
Upgrade FPS: up the spring 110 or 120, ptfe tape the cylinder head.
Range and airseal: Prommy soft straight bucking and flat nub.
Dont go tighter bore than 6.03, buy the best SS barrel you can.

Re: upgrading the range n fps for a tm 417D
thanks guys..
it a second hand one.. but in quite good nick...
actually my cqb was chrono-ing 340-ish on 0.2's... but i was using 0.25's yesterday ( only because i forgot to bring the 0.2's for the cqb ) and felt that it shot further.. i knew it would have a higher fps but had always thought tm recoil would match at least the same range as the cqb.
maybe i should reconfigure it to a dmr?
i clean all my barrel after every game so maybe i think i shall try cleaning the hop and see how it goes..
thanks guys for the advice!!

Re: upgrading the range n fps for a tm 417D
Right, lets say 340 with a 0.2 is what you want to get (as others have pointed out that the gun would be too powerfull). Its around the sweet spot at most sites for using a 0.25. As higher FPS may also make you slightly more inaccurate (lets not get onto that but trust me).
TM hops are usually quite good, I would avoid touching the gearbox if you haven't done that kind of things before (trust me its worth £20 on a tech than £200 on a gun), now a tight bore (unless you already have one in your gun) would almost certainly bring up the FPS, and also if you have a ported cylinder (AKA does your cylinder have holes in?) then replacing this for a standard cylinder would increase your FPS also. The barrel is easy to do, replacing the spring and/or the cylinder is not so easy. I would say if you are new to tech stuff. Replace the barrel, should help with accuracy too. Do bear in mind though that if you have a ported cylinder for say a 370mm barrel (idk how long the 417D barrel is so just bear with me here) and you stick in a 435mm barrel with a suppressor or barrel extension in. With the hope you will get more range, if you have a ported cylinder for a 370mm barrel you will experience lower FPS or extremely reduced range from keeping your barrel length. So first port of call, check if the TM has a ported cylinder, I dont think it does, so you should be good to take out the hop and stick in a new barrel whether that be the same length or even longer than your existing one.
Also may I add, I run a LCT AKM 63 (435mm inner barrel) shoots 300FPS with a 0.2 and as low as 230 with a 0.25. (As my hop has to be turned higher) now the time to target is a disadvantage due to FPS however I can reach people beyond 40 meters. And I am particularly proud of shooting someones exposed boot at upwards of 50m, I would say that is pretty similar to a TM in performance so use that as a benchmark if you want.

Also only just saw you said that you clean your barrel after every game! Do not put the following inside of it:
Any type of grease
WD40
Brasso (or other metal polishes)
just use a slightly lubricated cloth that has had some spray silicone on it as any of the stuff I listed may damage or decrease the effectiveness of your barrel for example brasso leaves tiny scratches inside your barrel and wears it down a little so over time it may make your gun less accurate! Also I always leave the hop up chamber dry of lube and only use some silicone between the hop rubber outside and the hop unit so it slides in nice and easy.

If it's firing 340 on 0.2 I would say it's already been upgraded

Re: upgrading the range n fps for a tm 417D
If it's second hand, it might be worth changing the hop rubber. Could be worn, hence the lack of range
I've got a standard TM SCAR-H. I bought it for the out the box range and have to say, I haven't been disappointed

Re: upgrading the range n fps for a tm 417D
I would recommend the following:
Eagle6 M90 spring for next generation recoil shock
BTC Spectre - You won't find one until the bloke that makes them in America does another batch. Sign up on his website to be notified on the next batch availability.
6.03 tightbore inner barrel 275mm length
M90 will give you 310 to 330 plus 10 to 15 with the tightbore will bring it up to around 320 to 345 depending on airseal etc. The BTC will give you a quicker trigger response and you can set them up for all sorts of combinations (safe-semi-auto, safe, 3 round - auto etc)
buy all these bits and give it to a shop to fit and save yourself a lot of bother.

Woah... thats an idea.. . but i dun think i need the BTC.. dont really want to install a mosfet-thingine cos i am sticking to their sopmod battries ( or nimh battries anyway with the convertors ) but i do like the idea of the spring, barrel and hop change.. ^^
also anybody have ideas if TM's 417 and VFC's 417 parts are compatible? was hoping to get a shorter handguard/rail

they are. The shorter VFC handguard fits straight onto the TM 417.

Re: upgrading the range n fps for a tm 417D
Great advice on here so far as always guys, but as I've always said, ask a question on here, and you'll get an expert answer, (something FB, will never achieve) and no Zehave, a longer barrel makes next to no difference at all in airsoft guns..
"This is my rifle, it's just a toy one, there are many like it, they're toy ones too, without it, i'm £250 better off, without me, it gathers dust in the corner, we're just big boys playing soldiers, lets try and remember that" play fair have fun.
