Re: has anyone done or seen a sustained fire line in airsoft?
Me and a few ex squaddie mates attempted this when we first started airsofting.
The problem we realised is that there is no fear of hot lead, this greatly reduces the effects of suppressive fire. and the bad guys can see where your BB's are landing or just ignore the hits if they can see that you didn't see them land.
Travel time seemed to be an issue too.
Hi-caps helped a bit though, no need to ease off or pause for mag changes.
Hope this helps.

Problem with my team was we were all using midcaps and shooting at the same time.
This ment we were all re-loading at the same time too! Not a good idea :P
So lesson learnt there, take it in turns to shoot.

Re: has anyone done or seen a sustained fire line in airsoft?
I have been playing since 2004 and I very rarely see this used as I must be fair and say that most players don't have that great an appreciation of tactics.
I did play in a team back in 2006 for a few weeks who used a supression team and an assault team and the fire team consisted of 4 guys, (2 minimis and 2 M16s). The Minimi guys basically fired in full auto for 2 seconds, 2 seconds off, 2 seconds on against whilethe other guy fired in the gaps. The guys withthe M16s fired single shot once every 2 seconds to conserve ammo while the assault team moved up and closed with the defenders.
The problem in airsoft is that often the guys you're playing against don't understand defensive tactis so tend not to find cover, so that the tactical team can often find themselves fighting in a purely suppressiverole without the need to employ the assault team.
It's probably better off linking up with anther team interested in tactics and organise a smaller scale game somewhere instead of playing against the uninitiated otherwise airsoft can become rather dull for the tactically minded as you may be experiencing.

Re: has anyone done or seen a sustained fire line in airsoft?
I train with Stirling Airsoft and everything you learn and do is about small unit tactics which does nearly always involve forming a baseline in reaction to contact. Sustaining that line is usually done during a section attack phase where you leverage an M249 (among other full auto weapons) volume of fire plus a few rifleman to create the impression of a larger group giving out fire and drawing the attention of the oppo while part of your section maneuvers around for a quick strike to the oppop weak side.
It's something that needs practice with the same bunch of guys. After practice it can be effective but does depend on how many of you have been shot in th initial first 5 seconds of the contact. Sometimes it's a peel to the rear to disengage!
There are a common set of section drills that can easily be used in airsoft. It's a case of choosing a small set and practicing regularly until its second nature.
Drop'm out with a low cap and save the environment.

Re: has anyone done or seen a sustained fire line in airsoft?
we try doing tactics but it doesnt seem to work always. the thing is all the guns are to accurate on auto. now in airsoft we are using "army tactics" with guns that have no recoil and generaly have a high amount of ammunition. the enemy you up against can quite happily spray a whole high cap or 8 at you all day and hit you pretty much every shot. so fire and manouvre tactics dont tend to work either. while you are trying to suppress the enemy they are thinging of ways in which they can spray you back without getting hit.

Yep - I think you're right. Employing small unit tactics is only going to work in a milsim environment/scenario where everyone is limted to mid-caps or less and you have limited ammo. Daily ammo limit of 600 rounds for a whole day works well.
These days I mostly (90% of time) go to milsim events and only go to normal airsoft days to zero and test (on airsofters!) my weapons. Paying £20 to zero and test my guns for the whole day and have a laugh is well worth it!
There is a growing trend for milsim events. It helps develop skills and experience. You can certainly get to test and practice a sustained fire line in various drills.

Re: has anyone done or seen a sustained fire line in airsoft?
Using either of my support guns I will lay down heavy (burying people in bb's style) fire on a position whilst the 4 or 5 people I regularly play with move in and take the kill shots. Dunno if thats any help, I've also used beaten zone style tactics to deny approaches to a hilltop position to the opposing team whilst a the remainder of the team take point shots on opposing players who try moving up.

+1 with specialist on this one, if you want to see more tactics in game, milsim is the way forward.
