They are fairly similar. A gunshot is around 170db ... 170 is typical of an m1 garand being fired from 1m away. A 12g being dropped on the floor near you would therfore be similar. A flashbang produces a sound between 170-180db ... So it is louder, but not by much.
It is worth noting with these numbers that 115 db over short term exposure (long than a single bang) is enough to cause permanant hearing damage. Also, 130db is the pain threshhold in humans. Distance is a key factor in sound pressure levels. Throwing a 12g BFG near someone is far better than throwing it next to them. Permanat hearing damage is unlikely to be caused unless there are a scuession of bangs over several seconds in close proximity.

Re: BFG rules
Just out of curiosity has anyone brought a new Dynatech BFG recently and still have the operations manual for it? If so can you have a flick through and see if it still says you should not throw it towards anyone and it shouldn’t be let off closer than 3 meters to some one.

Maybe, but I suspect that would be for prolonged periods.

Well, you're not supposed to throw them at ppl but I know what you mean.

Re: BFG rules
12g should NOT be used indoors because they are VERY frikken loud! I'd hate to have one thrown at me outside let alone indoors.

INFRASOUND.
'100 Cycles Per Second (Hz) - At this level, a person experiences irritation, "mild nausea, giddiness, skin flushing, and body tingling." Following this, a person undergoes "vertigo, anxiety, extreme fatigue, throat pressure, and respiratory dysfunction." (source; the Sonic Weapon of Vladimir Gavreau, by Gerry Vassilatos)
There you go.

use 9mm blanks! 12 gauge are dangerous in confined spaces and can cause nausea + more

Re: BFG rules
At my site, if your within 5 meters of a BFG, or any other pyro you'r off to the dead zone. But even if your site is different, it's still worth getting one
they are
very
loud!
