Re: What happened to this forum?

Facebook is shit, a scammers paradise, & overpopulated with noob players with big mouths & the wrong mindset for the longevity of our sport.
Plus admin/moderation on the numerous pages is generally poor, often run by people who've been kicked off of the proper forums because of the issues I've listed above, so have chosen to use FB instead because it's piss easy to set up & within it their word is law, no matter how fucked up their opinion is.
Unfortunately this just puts the perceived negative aspects of airsoft even further in to the public domain, where it can do more harm.

To be honest the title of this thread is poor, the forums haven't gone downhill, times have changed, less people currently have the disposable income for buying stuff or even just getting to gamedays.
A good example in the classifieds is kit that would previously sold in hours is now hanging around for weeks, sometimes longer, with the only possible exception being gbbr's, definitely the flavour of the month.

    IMHO.

      Got to agree with Mark!

I get really irritated with FB groups. Yes you can pick up a good deal every now and then but you can't really buy with confidence as there is no feedback function etc.
There is also no organisation in the groups like there is here.

The groups are often filled with people who can barely string a sentence together and are often rude and confrontational I've found.

I believe things may change again once the FB groups get overcrowded and are no longer the new thing and you may find people come back to forums, I for one hope this is the case anyway.

This place has a lot to offer in information and structure including good moderation (although I understand why some get frustrated with it)!

Re: What happened to this forum?

I actually still find these forums useful. I check back every week or so, I always have 4+ pages unread, and I've bought and sold probably going on 20 things through here with no issues whatsoever. Yes FB is eating a lot of the casual traffic so we're not seeing as much as we were, but I still like the threads on here - the recent one on drone use for example.

I'd also rather buy here with a formalised feedback system I can check, rather than FB - I trust it more.

Re: What happened to this forum?

I still come back to the forum because theres more sales threads, i'm not always looking to buy, but it's always nice to have a gander. And then whine when I can't afford something pretty.

Facebook is easier to post threads with pictures on through smartphones as I can't do so through this or Tapatalk. I think IMO that's what's caused most to go through Facebook, you can have a quick flick at lunch, or when you're going for your routine toilet break. It's all out of ease. Mind you, even at home I use my phone over my laptop, but I'm lazy so..

Re: What happened to this forum?

I still prefer the forums over Facebook.

The forums are so much easier to navigate, you can find the sales in sales or pics in the pictures section. But when it comes to Facebook you have to scroll through hundreds of various posts ranging from sales, advice to trolling to eventually find the post you were looking at earlier.
Plus the forums are so much better at showing custom builds in great detail, instead of spamming a Facebook page every 5 mins with every little detail, where here it is confined to one thread.

Facebook is only good for a quick flick through, but no good for great detail either. Reading a whole article on here is so much easier to type or read than having it posted on Facebook. Most people would get bored or struggle to read it or find it a pain in the arse to type out on a phone keypad, I know I do.

Yep, as well as the usual fb drama & bs, finding something you glimpsed earlier in the day can be a pain in the arse to say the least.

Re: What happened to this forum?

Facebook has risen up to replace a lot of the biz that Zeroin used to do, I have been mostly using FB myself recently and just pop in on here once a fortnight to lurk around...

But the real villain here that has caused the forums to decline and the rise of FB is ROYAL MAIL... those complete idiots have brought in more and more restrictions for RIF's, Lithium Cells and Anything that has gas holding mags involved..

I had three sales on this forum that went to the dogs because of royal mail stupidity, and now it is just easier to join or create a more localised FB group that allows you to meet face to face and circumvent Royal Mail, also makes it easier to speak to the local Skirmish sites and members thereof to check UKARA or Membership status and make sure you are not dealing with a muppet..

Re: What happened to this forum?

The amount of dislike for Facebook is a little worrying over anything else, you'll need to adapt to changes sooner or later, and with more people migrating over to Facebook for airsoft you'll likely be left behind. I see why people do it too, it's just more convenient to scroll through groups on your phone.

If the lack of moderation is putting some people off, then you need to ask admins of current groups if they can't step up their game, get more involved or even consider taking more admins on. Facebook isn't a perfect system or even a good one, but it's popular and it works, but that doesn't stop me from browsing the forums too.

Its not about adapting to a newer format! it's more about the limiting factor Facebook has, and no matter how many mods you have wont change it.

Take a build thread on here for example.
Say you have 60 pages of info and 100 photos. With Facebook it will shove all the photos together in any old order and all the writing as one block. Plus I doubt it would allow to add all that in one post. so you would have to spam the group with hundreds of posts. Where in a forum you could keep it all together with 1 thread. You could then add all that info over say 6 post with all the info with the correct pictures making it easier to follow.
Plus you can't appreciate photos as well as you can on here. Yes both Facebook and the forums have a size limit on photos. But at least the forums will allow you to link from a URL, so you can show all the photos right up to RAW size.

Plus it's also easier to search a forum than a Facebook group. Take a sale post for example. On Facebook you have to scroll through hundreds of posts to eventually find a post added earlier during the day. Where on a forum its all listed, so you only have to find the section, then select the thread.
Yes I know you could "like" the post on Facebook. But then you end up with your phone constantly pinging with 100's of notifications of useless posts asking questions for info that has already posted, but can't be bothered to hit the "continue reading" button. Where here it's all there right in front of you!

Same could be said for simple questions. You get post after post of the same questions day upon day where people really can't be bothered to scroll through. Where on a forum you can use the search bar of even the advice section to see if it has been asked before. Yes I know the forums do get people that ask the same questions, but not 10 -20 post in one group in one week.

To be honest the list could go on. But these are just the few that make me still prefer the forums over Facecbook!

Re: What happened to this forum?

I would still stick with ZeroIn over FB pages, as this place has been going for so long and some names come up so frequently, you can get an idea of who knows what they're talking about and those people earn a certain degree of trust.

I've got to say though, coming back on here after a while away I'm disappointed to see all this stuff with Photobucket holding people's photos hostage. The main reason I used to love reading through the forum was for inspiration on gun builds, loadouts etc., and now a good 75% of those pictures have gone. I don't know if there's any way to rectify this without everyone paying for some ridiculously overpriced Photobucket membership, but if not I'd urge everyone to go and repopulate the forum with some decent gun porn and gear photos! :D

Re: What happened to this forum?

I had the same problem with pictures when recently posting in the sales section, it will take a while to build back up again as people post pictures of their kit. In reality most people will have seen the pictures from a few years ago and will look forward to newer posts with people showing off their kit and guns as they have different set ups now. Doesnt help newer folk but you cant win em all

Its easy enough to post pictures without any external hosting site such as photobucket so hopefully this will help get more pictures on the site. Plus the short lived classifieds and discussions on facebook seem to have driven traffic back to forums such as this (although must admit that it is quieter than a good few years ago).
