  • What is Airsoft to you and Why do you play Airsoft ?

Following on from a lively discussion in another thread an interesting question has been asked and I would be keen to know

    1. What is Airsoft to you?
    2. Why do you play Airsoft?

For me Airsoft is a release, somewhere to let off some controlled aggression whilst having a good crack with my mates.
And I play because I would have loved to have been in the forces but ultimately didn't have the bottle to kill someone. Airsoft satisfies my fix for guns and I get to meet some pretty cool people in the process.

So come on let's hear you.

For me, airsoft is a fun activity; it is time spent being very silly playing soldiers with friends and my son. It is also about de-stressing.

I play because I enjoy it, because it is one of the things that my son and I do together, and because I find that it helps with my PTSD.

It's an out of the usual money pit :D

Nah it's generally just an escapist thing where you lark around and have a bit of manly fun and end up with scars and bruises to show for it.

It's also a lot less frustrating than video games what with all the aimbots, wallhax etc. I recall a few video games I played which just made me frustrated and more stressed than before. One particular game of note was ages ago. An enemy team member walked out of a door his back facing me. I then died, he'd aimbotted so fast that hit character model didn't even turn around for more than 1 frame.

While OTOH there is ALWAYS (if the site is well built) a way to turn the odds to your favour. A well built site is nearby. There are 2 open corridor exits to spawn. So sure you can get spawn camped pretty easy. But there are 3 tunnels behind to go through if this happens.

Never would have thought it helped with PTSD, maybe that's why I like it so much. I must admit I do feel very calm when I am building RIF's

Re: What is Airsoft to you and Why do you play Airsoft ?

Thanks for starting another discussion these Lee as I find forums on the decline in recent years (probably due to the rise of social media as that's where all the cool kids hang out).

My journey into Airsoft has been pretty recent really maybe just over a year of regular playing ( once a week if I can). I started because my son plays and his mates and brother enjoy drinking more than playing so he found he was a Billy no mates most of the time going on his own.

Prior to this I used to rip the piss out him "playing soldiers" and told him he should do it for real instead (I'm ex forces myself and realised in 91 that I wasn't ready to die in a desert so took redundancy a couple of years after, I never tell anyone in Airsoft that I served etc as I find it a bit crimgy when some blokes you meet can't wait to start spouting how they served as if it's going to impress , again my own personal feeling)

I used to play paintball at completion level around 2005 so again much ribbing wad aimed at my sons for being on the dark side, pointing, gesticulating and overall top bants on my behalf.

So one day my lads having to go on his own again as son 2 is sleeping off a hangover from hell so I said I would tag along...and now I'm well over a grand down have four guns, numerous spares from failed tinkering and enough kit to dress my own brigade!

So I predominantly play so myself and my son can have some quality time together, we work well as a two man hit squad.

I've met some cool guys whilst playing but unfortunately I've come across a few arse holes as well but you can't like everyone.

I go through a lot of hobbies so I don't know how long this one will last. But any hobby that I can tinker with (electronics, computer, photography etc) then I get hooked.

          Cheers.

Re: What is Airsoft to you and Why do you play Airsoft ?

I used to do historical reenactment with swords and axes and such, but then my kids came along. I could get back into it, but most of the day is spent travelling, lugging gear around, or getting rained on. Paintball, getting rained on. Airsoft, getting raine- no, wait, there's an indoor site 10 minutes from my house. Let's pew-pew.

That's why I started, which was only a month ago. I'm loving it it so far, as it ticks all my boxes: arm's length 'contact' sport that requires a lot of integrity and self restraint; weapons based to keep the hippies away; a practically limitless money sink; hilariously convoluted laws that can in practice be sodded right off with some Dettol and a scrubbing brush.

Everybody I've met so far have been thoroughly friendly, decent and sensible people, which is a good sign. No mentals yet.

I might give the woodsy aspect a try, but really that's more for the Ewoks.

              In descending order ;
1, have some escape time from reality
              2, spend time with mates
              3, have a laugh
4, run around with pretend guns shooting people (for some reason society as a whole frown apon you doing it for real !
              Who knew ?)
5, collect 'realistic' looking guns as you can't have real ones (same reason as above)
6, trying ( and mostly failing) to regain my lost youth in the forces !
              Think that covers it !

Re: What is Airsoft to you and Why do you play Airsoft ?

I served (light infantry), a long time ago, at least 30 years ago to be precise, & being army barmy back then I thrived on the fitness & activity, especially the big exercises.
I'm also an ex county level rugby player, semi-pro ice hockey player & undefeated amateur boxer, so yep very physical adrenaline contact sports really used to float my boat, but by the time I'd hit my thirties various injuries, including a high speed motorcycle rta, coupled with the pressures of "grown up" life etc, had really slowed my flow.
The bike rta was a gamechanger, I'd been in my job 10yrs & subsequently pensioned off, but had also started the process of joining the plod, just lost my second son & moved home, sinking my savings in to a money pit coastal home needing massive renovation.
Quite literally the rug was ripped from under me, seemed like everything that could go wrong did, I sunk in to a massive depression, started drinking while having to mooch around on crutches for the first 6 months & literally lost the will to live.
Finally started working in a very different job, struggled with the health & fitness (still do lol), but then a chance meeting with a relative, also ex forces (navy diver), & he told me about Airsoft, quite literally raving about it, so I threw a bit of kit together, a budget mp5k & a G19 (which I still own) & as I was working in London I gave the old Elektrowerkz site a go, frickin loved it, & was hooked.
That was 16-17yrs ago, don't play as much now but my son now plays too, so ample excuses to keep playing (& buying ), & while I can't say Airsoft saved my life, it definitely gave a focus that aspects of mundane life & depression had suppressed, even now the missus knows when I'm getting too stressed, & will often suggest I get out & "shoot" someone.
As for the "WALT" side of the game, it's just that, a game, a great training tool & distraction, but ultimately it's a fun "sport", not meant to be taken too seriously, so when I see people being elitist or overly aggressive it makes my blood boil, as they're spoiling it for the genuine players.

Mmm, I was a bit nervous that it would be mostly 101st Fighting Keyboardists having flashbacks to 'Nam, but my local CQB is about 2/3rds tacticool, and the rest is trackies and trainers. On my first day there was a chap dressed as Deadpool which was a great laugh and really set me at ease.

I quite fancy doing a Bob the Builder loadout for the Hallowe'en Sunday. Rubber wrench, pistol in the toolbelt, can we frag it? YES WE CAN!

Wow Tackle talk about looking in a mirror ! Not to your extent but basically what you've written here is an account of my life and a team mates who quit frankly in the 6-7 yrs I've got to know him has become my best mate on and off the field.
I'm ex-army he's ex-RAF Reg (but I try not to hold it against him too much !) and what you've written there is waaaaay too close to an account of our lives as well .
Well written my friend and so spot on .

Thanks Bruv, yeah life can be crappy, but I think that's the draw of Airsoft, it's fairly low pressure compared to regular competitive sports, you can literally walk away (or hobble lol), come back a year or two later & usually very little has changed, you can turn up at most sites as a billy-no-mates & 95% of the players there will gladly chat & be very welcoming, the only other "hobby" I'd say mirrors that are bikers, another usually very sociable pastime.

Exactly, you can be an energy charged hero screaming around the site (safely say NOT us?) or a worn out knackered old grumpy monkey (that's me !) and all stages in between but still enjoy the game .
