    7.4v LiPo style are similar to what you get from a 9.6v normal battery.

    Don't go for the overkill. 7.4s are FINE.

      ^ As above. 7.4v Lipos do the job very nicely without dead motors, shredded gears, melted Tamiyas or stupidly high and unrealistic rates of fire...
