  • Left my sniper cocked overnight :S

Hi all, just a small query...

I was test firing my L96 last night and found out today that overnight and today I'd left it cocked and ready to fire. Will this have damaged or reduced the power of the spring at all? It doesn't sound like it has the same thwack when firing

    Cheers

I'd get it chronoed. I'm afriad to say that chances are you've compressed your spring.

I've left my CA m24 with a PDI spring cocked for 5 days before by accident. FPS remained exactly the same afterwards.

Not condoning it - just saying you may not be screwed

I suppose it depends on the spring quality. CA/PDI springs will most likely hold themselves up well.

If it is a well it will more than likely compress as chinese springs are easily compressed when left overnight, you may be lucky and only lost a few fps.

i left my tm vsr spring cocked for ages (dont know exactly)
i forgot it was cocked and the spring was shorter than my laylax 120 sp
i think its because of the cocked spring

Well it's an upgraded spring, unsure of manufacturer tho. Fingers crossed it's not too buggered

it wont be too buggered in the spring sense mate,

but make sure you check the sears and piston for signs of stress

I chronoed it yesterday and it was firing at 350fps with .30gram BBs so I think some power has been lost. Still not terrible though - got a couple of nice kills :D

What was it doing before? I make 350/0.3 approx 430/0.2, which depending on brand & upgrades sounds OK.

Even if the spring is slightly compressed, you should find that it should return to its manufactured state through use.

On one of the other forums, there was a long thread about compressed mag springs. Long story short, poor quality springs can be permanently compressed. Anything half-way decent should return to its normal state with use. Keeping the spring compressed overnight should be too little force to cause any permanant defect.

As guard-sniper said, Id be more concerned about your sears

Springs have an elastic limit. You have to push them over that limit or change their properties to knacker them.

sorry to hijack this thread but one quick question - 80fps drop for a 0.1g increase?? Is that considered to be a 'normal' speed drop for weight increase?

Look at it another way, 19% drop in velocity for a 100% increase in weight.

Doesn't sound so bad now does it?
