Help me name this M16 please...

    Help me name this M16 please...

    Ok, this was sold to me as an A1 but looking closer it has an A2 lower, A2 thicker outer barrel, A2 type grip and A2 stock. So is it an A2 even without the elevation adjustable rear sight? Oh it also has a circular forward assist as opposed to a tear drop type.

    You may find it is an A2 but with an A1 upper, either that or the manufacturer cocked up?

      It could well be someone's custom build. It's not a Systema M120 gearbox in there is it?

        As far as I know its G&P and G&P never made an A2 though they've always made all the parts. What i'm after is an armalite expert to tell me if A2s ever came with the older rear sight assembly?

          @Devlin, thats a 'G&P AR15 A2'.

          Just google it, you find loads of info.

          P.s. its roughly equivalent to the real steel 'M16A1E1' designed during the late 70s PIP. Basically, some features of the M16A2 started to be retrofitted to some M16A1s and then tested out. Then, eventually, the full M16A2 was developed and introduced.

            Yes I know but i'm interested in real steel here, just because G&P say its an A2 does'ntmake it so. A few years back A&K released and A3 with VN handguards and called it an M16 Vn but it is'nt.

                  The M16 you have is an M16A2, undoubtedly, even with A1 style sights.

                  And yes, some real steel M16A2s would have the original rear sight. Of course there are two caveats to that:
                  -Firstly, not many would be producd in that configuration - the M16A2 rear sight was introduced and added shortly after.
                  -Secondly, the G&P transition model is not a particullarly good representation of reality since the A2 type pistol grip was one of the last modfications to be introduced AFAIK. Thus, having the A2 type pistol grip and not the A2 sights is unlikely.

                    Thats what I was after mate thankyou, this is a passable M16a2.

                      The lower is definately A1 style, the area where the front body pin goes through is a harsh 90 degree angle to the magazine well. On the A2 and subsequent armalites that area is curved. What markings does it have on the magazine well?

                        You sure? I know you could buy an A2 in the past from HK but it was'nt made by G&P, it was assembled from G&P parts by a third party.
