New Torch: Does it need protection?
16 October, 2012, 23:34
I just got a new torch for my M4 with a pressure switch and it works like a dream.
I was just thinking though, on my last game somebody got very unlucky with a shot breaking the glass of their scope....how likely is it that a BB might hit the light and break it?
Is there a way of covering it to protect it, without affecting the performance?
Cheers!

Re: New Torch: Does it need protection?
Sadly it's one of those things. You often hear about EOTechs being smashed too.
You can buy protective lenses for most torches, but they will slightly reduce the shining capabilities... but I think it's worth it if it gives you state of mind
The chances of a BB strike on your torch is relatively low. However, if playing in the dark often, it can be what your enemies aim for in the heat of the moment!

if your torch has a lens that you can remove, best thing to do is buy a cheap pair of safety glasses, and cut a new lens out of them. even if struck they wont break.

Re: New Torch: Does it need protection?
stick some sticky back plastic over the end of it, so it has a skin to go through before it hits the lens.
Ive had a aimpoint shot out before, oddly it was the back lens not the front one lol.
My torch hasnt been hit directly yet, as i know of, as its still in tact.

the back lens....now that is unlucky
back to the op, the chances are very high, think about it, you are in a dark room, they can only see your light, what are they gonna shoot at?

Re: New Torch: Does it need protection?
On the flip side, it's normally fairly easy to replace the lens of a torch if it does get broken. most serve no more purpose than protecting the bulb/LED from dirt and damage.
with optics, the lenses are often a little more than that, providing magnifying or simmilar properties, which make them somewhat more specialist, and so harder to replace if broken.

Yes, I've had my surefire shot out and it's been sent back to the uk distributor to get repaired.

Re: New Torch: Does it need protection?
Yeah had my cheap backup torch as a deterrent the other night and it got shot out. On the plus side I guess as they shot that I guess it worked well as a distraction
