whats the point of a pistol landyard and how would you use one

It's attached to your pistol then the other end is attached to you, so if your pistol falls out of its holster then you shouldnt lose it as it is still attached

Lots, Highly recommended. It saves you spending half an hour looking around in bushes if for whatever reason it comes out of your super secure holster, or you put it down in the heat of battle.
I know this as I spent an hour very frustrated looking for my glock in a hillside of brambles. It's now attached to my belt by paracord, getting a lanyard ASAP.
