  • Sniper rifle hop and bb weights

Few questions, if you have a 500fps rifle, what weight bbs would you use for 50m hits?
Is distance on a heavier bb determined by how much hop you apply and will it come a point where with full hop you cant get the range as bb too heavy?

    Hope that makes sense

with my L96 i still use the standard hop that came with it and i have no problems with mine at all. As for bb weight it's up to you but really anything over 0.30g

Re: Sniper rifle hop and bb weights

For high fps, it's better to have a hard hop rubber, as this won't compress so much when you give it loads of hop.

You're right, the heavier the BB, in theory, the shorter the range as any given amount of power will push a lighter BB a greater distance. But, in reality, the heavier BBs are less effected by wind and so seem to manage ranges at least as good as lighter BBs. Also, while total range may not be as good, a heavier BB will stay on target for longer and will have the ability to cut through light foliage, where a lighter BB may go further, but is more likely to be blown off target and is quite easily stopped by leaves.

The reason i ask is im trying to work out if i need to replace my hop unit, im using .36s in a secondhand rifle but with full hop i struggle to hit at 60m on target and they drop

well try a lighter weight of bb's first (stay above 0.30g's tho) and if that dont work then get a harder hop rubber

60m on target is pretty good performance.

+1 on Rockin. That around 200ft and in anyones book that is good sniper range. My TM is standard and New and it doesnt get that. Don't touch it unless you are going to heavily upgrade, as it sounds like a good setup.

Thanks for all your advice guys. If I buy a pdi hop unit, will it come with the nub?

Re: Sniper rifle hop and bb weights

i have a pdi hope unit in my maruzen l96

                        with upgrades inside , im hitting 60+ with .40's/ 80+ on ..36's

all my ammo is from madbull

                        the hop unit is PDI
the rubber is a MADBULL SHARK 90 DEGREE ONE
and madbull tb barrel mate ,

for range with accuracy , id try using .33's but they are like hens teeth to get hold of,

as robin said , basically , lighter ammo , more range but less accuracy in tight groups
heavier ammo less range , but more tighter accuracy ,

as for l96 mate , use the ammo your on , or try BBKING .30's as they are great in my g-spec for range

                        hope this helps

depends where you get it from mate ,

i had the unit a h-nub included free when brought the rubber together with the unit
