Why is there so few electric pistols?
2 August, 2013, 11:37
I've noticed that primary weapons, mainly assault rifles, seem to be split pretty evenly between gas and electric. There's plenty of both readily available. But secondary weapons, mainly pistols, seem to be predominantly gas operated rather than electric. Does anyone know the reason for this?
Electric, to me, seems like an easier and more practical way to operate a gun.

Re: Why is there so few electric pistols?
Try squashing a motor, piston, gearbox etc into something a quarter of the size it was probably designed for.
There lies the answer.
Electric is the most popular and consistent way to operate an airsoft gun. That's why there are more aeg's than gbb's.
There's a scammer operating openly on this forum. Please be aware of who you're dealing with.

Re: Why is there so few electric pistols?
Because skirmishable GBB pistols were around first
Because GBB pistols are popular due to realistic action
Because electric pistols aren't that great, mostly due to BAMF's reasons above

Re: Why is there so few electric pistols?
They are often really low powered and most people I know prefer to have the kick of a pistol slide every time they pull the trigger.

Re: Why is there so few electric pistols?
Because you can only get a weedy fps out of an electric pistol (about 200), and they don't have all that awesome blowbackness that's so much more obvious in a pistol.

Re: Why is there so few electric pistols?
No only low FPS, but also poor trigger response... Unless you Lipo mod them, as I have done with mine.
In defense of the AEP, They work in pretty much any weather, and are often pretty reliable -something I've always struggled to find with any gas pistol I've owned- and if you are only going to use them in tight quarters then the FPS is much less of an issue

Re: Why is there so few electric pistols?
As the others have said, because they're underpowered, very slow to fire and very unrealistic compared to GBB pistols, which were already advanced and selling well when AEPs were in their infancy. Their problems are magnified because at close range (pistol range) the shortcomings of GBBs (inconsistency, low rates of sustained fire) aren't a problem so GBB pistols have few drawbacks. You essentially don't need the consistency and repeatability of an AEG as a sidearm.
In terms of reliability, I've heard that the TM AEPs are pretty good. However, if you're only using it as a sidearm, a TM P226 or Hi-Capa is also pretty foolproof and resistant to weather - not to mention substantially more powerful, upgradeable and realistic.

Re: Why is there so few electric pistols?
I've got two TM G18C AEPs that I use during the winter (when I absolutely have no choice because it's too cold) and I've got three TM G18C GBBs that I use during the spring/summer/autumn. For me the only advantages are that they work when it's cold and they're cheaper to run. As has been said in previous posts, AEPs are not at all realistic in terms of their action, they're nowhere near as powerful and, very important for me, they're just not fun to fire like GBBs... especially the GBB G18Cs on full-auto
Things I hate:

2. Irony.
3. Lists.

Re: Why is there so few electric pistols?
Thanks for the responses guys.
I was aware that they had a much lower FPS than GBBs but, like one or two mentioned, at close range, that's not really an issue.
Some other helpful and informative points made though.
Cheers.

The battery's on aep pistols are expensive for what they are , lipo conversion is much better .
Only use them if its too cold to use a gbb for all the reasons already stated .

Re: Why is there so few electric pistols?
I bought a TM G18 AEP to use when it was too cold for anything else.
Sold it because they are fucking boring. I'd rather mount an unarmed charge.
Buy my stuff!

Re: Why is there so few electric pistols?
Youtube.
But basically either a bit of hacking in the battery compartment and some soldering for a connector, or as I did on my g18c, use a prolite battery/torch attachment. You can get quite a big battery in one and now its a proper beast. Doesn't do anything for your FPS but the the trigger response becomes virtually prescient.

Re: Why is there so few electric pistols?
i made a forward pistol grip for mine that fits on the under barrel rail ,it holds a spare mag and 11.1v lipo. it makes it a lot more bulky ,more of a pdw but trigger response is great and its a cheep cyma one so if it explodes i'll probably just laugh.
