  • Broadsword Calling Danny Boy...

So, I have a comms question...

I have a Kenwood radio (2 pin) and a Cavalvy Elite II headset. I have recently acquired a Motorola XTNiD radio (thanks windywindmill!) which obviously uses a different 2 pin connector. Now, the Cavalvy headset's are getting on, but I can get a replacement PTT cable to fit the Motorola for about $40 (plus potentially import duty and such like) although these seem to be in somewhat short supply now.

Now, bearing in mind I'm a tight @rse, what are my other options? I do like the design of my current headset, as it doesn't block out too much background noise and seems to work very well, but am I better spending a few quid more and getting something from say Z-Tactical?

    Cheers!

Can't really answer your question but I do use a pair of Z Tactical Sordins. These fit under my bump helmet (with a thin strap on) and I can adjust the volume for the mics in the cups for how much outside noise. For a cheap set of Sordins, I am quite impressed. Not sure on how long they are going to last as that will be the clincher.

Cheapest option - get the connector changed (solder it yourself if you can)

I would say with the Z Tactical sordins by the time you've bought them they're what, £60+? The basic model of genuine sordins (albeit without a boom mic) costs under £100 in some places. These have an AUX in, so you can plug that directly into the radio and use the radio like a speaker mic. With the XTNID, the connector cable you get with the sordins goes straight into the right socket on the radio to get audio from the radio in the headset.

Or what I did was butcher an old headset for the mic, solder the cables together into one big on and end up with a nice tidy (and cheap) solution.

Th ztactical sordins are very good. The noise amplification is weird at first as you can hear better whilst actually wearing them (anyone eating a packet of crisps near you will do your swede in)

A new ztactical cavalry headset and a new PTT combo should run you about £40 together delivered from a certain site I use. Also as mentioned above. You could just out a connector and get the soldering iron out. Would be the cheapest option.
