Yes they made me take the second hand one into an Airsoft shop to get a headed letter saying it was indeed broken.

Without trying to insinuate anything, do you have proof of this?
Reason being, it would help anyone else who's basically been told to GFY

I have also had a refund from Paypal for a RIF due to a 'lost parcel', outside of the protection window too.

But was there any mention of RIF/Firearm/Gun?

Yup. They asked what it was and I told them it was an airsoft gun.

I got stitched over a rif recently, and Pay Pal told me that rifs were not covered and clearly excluded in their terms.

I think they make it up as they go along. I did threaten them with legal action so it might depend on how much you want to fight. This might have been before dealing with RIFs was less of a no no. Unless it has always been this way.

I've also received a PayPal refund for a lost RIF (sent to the wrong address by the retailer, and therefore seized by the Border Force as it didn't match the supplied UKARA details). I didn't explicitly specify it was an airsoft gun, but I bought it from an airsoft retailer. I have wondered whether the fact that it was customer versus big business, rather than customer vs. customer, that influenced the outcome.

Re: No protection when purchasing IFs/ RIFs through PayPal
charge backs and section 75 of consumer credit act (purchases over £100) dont apply if you make payment through a third party (paypal), they do however cover direct creditcard (NOT debit card, although VISA do offer chargeback protection theirs, not sure about the others but i worked for visa so know they do) payments and DO cover items arriving not as described and if your card issuer denies what you think is a valid claim you can contact the financial ombudsman and have them mediate.
ONLY thing im hazzy about (stopped working for visa years ago) is whether this protection covers private sellers, i would think yes but can think of things that make me think maybe not :P

I was under the impression S75 still applies for Paypal if funded from credit card.

Well damn. I always thought it was like having a double layer of protection. I will stop doing that then. Thanks for the heads up.
Same issue with Amazon Marketplace sellers it seems.

An airsoft gun is not a firearm, it's a toy. That's the UK legal position, so tell paypal to go f**k themselves.

In terms of the legal definition they are replica imitation firearms and thus subject to the term 'firearm' within the PayPal terms of service.
Telling PayPal to commit sexual acts upon themselves will not help in any way.

Winston (getting unsteadily to his feet): "Madam, if I were your husband ... I'd drink it."
