Advice needed on MK18 block 2 style build
25 June, 2014, 23:06
Im looking at adding a mk18 block 2 to my collection.
I was wondering, what would the be best way to do this on a budget, approximately £400. As a base gun, i was planning to use a G&G cm16 or cm18 , and then adding a madbull dd ris 2.
Is this a viable option? Or would i be completely wasting my time trying to fit an aftermarket rail to a combat machine model?
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Advice needed on MK18 block 2 style build
combat machine is probably not the way to go, the barrel is free floated with a RIS2 so the slightest of knocks to the end of it puts a lot of strain on the upper receiver... which is plastic. Not only that, the front sight post is not removable, so you'd need to buy a new barrel too.
If I had a budget of £400 I'd get one of these:

Then bolt a FDE RIS2 onto it, it's rear wired which is what you really need (the RIS2 doesn't leave much room inside for batteries, I had a fun afternoon in a machine shop filing barrels and carving big lumps out of the inside of the rail on mine to get the batteries to fit). You can pick up a Mk18 length RIS 2 for about $100 and a low profile gas block for another $10-15 (plus shipping) from hong kong so the whole external build would probably run you for about £300 ish. Gives you £100 to pick up some block 2 appropriate accessories to dress it up with
Oh, and paint the lower to cover up those hideous G&P trademarks

what JCHEESE wrote. Not only is removing the RIS a complete pain in the ass but the barrel & front sight design essentially makes it so that you cannot move forward without buying your own aftermarket barrel and...god it's just so worth it.
*flashback to all the horrible time I wasted*

Cheers lads, just the sort of advice i was looking for!
Having never worked on an m4 before, is it a fairly easy task to remove the handguard and associated trimmings without the specialist tools (like an armorers wrench)? Im assuming it cant be that complicated because of all the different external mods that are available.

Re: Advice needed on MK18 block 2 style build
You will 100% need an armourer's wrench to fit the RIS, the barrel nut for it needs to go on REALLY REALLY tight and there's no other way of doing it, pipe grips and a bit of tape won't get you enough torque.

Pretty certain the Dd rail needs a specific tool too!
