Don't buy cheap and nasty, non CE approved eyewear.

He's damn lucky. If he'd tested them before using them this would not have happened. I always shoot mine from point blank range to make sure they're up to the job.

You should never test them like that. Any plastic designed to withstand an impact will do so, once and once only. You may not see the damage caused by your "test" but get hit in the same spot and then you may be in trouble. I suggest you bin your glasses and buy a new pair. Just make sure they are marked up with the correct ballistic rating.

its the same with a motorcycle crash helmet, you don't test it by falling off your bike at 40 mph or a child car seat, once it has had its impact, then its structural integrity has been compromised

Re: Some advice on eye pro
Regarding approved rating etc - I want to switch to mesh as every pair of goggles/mask I've used fogged up (even the expensive stuff).
Are these hire masks you get from many sites approved?

I ask as i bought one for a tenner to get me going, tested with my G36K shooting at 340fps from 5 meters away and there was serious denting and near penetration.

mesh is designed to dent, that's how it absorbs the impact. as long as sites keep an eye on the condition of it, you are fine.

Re: Some advice on eye pro
I possibly should have elaborated. I've used the same eye protection for years (I work in construction), even before I started playing airsoft. When I did start playing I used other products but fell back to what I was familiar and comfortable with. I tested my old pair by shooting point blank then ordered another 2 pairs (tinted and clear).
Possibly a pricey option if you don't have an old existing pair to test but what value do you place on your sight?
As for mesh, I've used it in the past but I'm not very comfortable as low quality BB's can shatter and filter through the perforations. There's also anecdotal evidence that suggests in the case of painted mesh, the paint can spall upon impact sending sharp paint flakes toward the eye.
