  • Advise changing HK 417d to DMR

Hi, I am looking to change my HK 417d into a dmr. Wondering best length of inner barrel. Would I be best to change the hop up, spring etc.
This is my first venture into dmr's so just seeking some thoughts of wisdom ?

    If you're feeling flush, there're 16" & 20" extension kits available

Start with telling us the make and model of your HK417. If what you are about to say is "It's a VFC!" then you should be made aware that the VFC HK417 has a horrible habit of cracking its gearbox when used with big springs - i.e., exactly the kind of springs you'll require to bring your gun up to DMR-levels of power. This problem seems to occur even with preventative measures like radiusing. There are whole gearbox conversions out there but they are a lot of work. If you were instead going to say "It's a Tokyo Marui!" then congratulations on your excellent taste, you don't have much to worry about.

What muzzle energy (FPS with 0.20g BB) are you aiming for?

Assuming you're heading for a UK-standard 400-450fps, you will be looking at least at:
      1. New mainspring.
      2. New inner barrel and hop-up rubber (preferably R-hop).
      3. New ammunition (0.36g or heavier).
      4. MOSFET/FCU, with full-auto lockout.
      5. 11.1v LiPo batteries.

You may also need, depending on what's in there at the moment, a new motor and/or gears (to help drag the heavy spring with reasonable trigger response) and other strengthened gearbox parts, especially if your gun is the TM which was never designed to operate above 1.0J.

I would avoid buying an extended front end for the gun - although it looks extremely cool, the gun weighs a f***ing ton already and is pretty unwieldy. Stick a steel Guarder 7.62 suppressor on the end and a bipod and you'll be getting a free workout as it is. Here's a friend's TM HK417 with a shorter (VFC) RIS and some accessories:

Oh, darn it me thinks, It's a VFC, I use a 11.1v already. I bought a 9.8" surefire llc silencer as saw it on another 417.

Maybe I walked before I should have crawled.

If you aren't using a MOSFET, I'd definitely get one if you want to continue using 11.1v batteries - you're eroding your trigger contacts using such high-voltage batteries and no 'FET.

If you want to turn it into a DMR, it's still a very suitable gun - but just be aware of the potential for having to buy a new gearbox shell.

I do have a mosfet installed, I am being told I need a high torque motor and a m130 spring
