  • Radio and comms

Right guys, I'm gonna be booking my first mil-sim event pretty soon and have the majority of the kit list sorted. However a friend has told me I really should try and get a radio set up as well. What would you recommend? Also, is it true you need a licence for certain radios?
Thanks for any help, regards, David.

    Re: Radio and comms

Certain radios do need a licence, and if you are part of a team/group of mates it might even be worth investing in one and using the appropriate radios, as they'll most likely be more powerful than ones you can get on public frequencies.

If that's not really viable, then you want a decent PMR446 radio. These are licence free and can be had for as little as £10 each. However, I'd recommend going with a known brand, such as Motorola, Kenwood, Midland, Cobra, to name a few.

The reason being, the quality of internal components makes a difference to how well your radio transmits/receives, and the popular brands are much easier to get accessories for. Personally I run a Motorola XTNiD which was pretty much their top of the range 446 radio a few years back. It's got a few more 'bells & whistles' on over the cheaper models, but it's all about how much you want to spend. I got it in a blinding trade deal, so...

You'll most likely get told about Baofeng radios. These are cheap and powerful Chinese radios that you can get from eBay, or some radio retailers. There are guys that use them for airsoft, BUT, they don't meet OFCOM's requirements for a PMR446 radio, so technically you would need a licence to use one.

Ok, thanks very much, any idea on the type of licence? Where to get one? Where to apply, what it entails? Thanks
