Which M249?
23 August, 2010, 12:38
A friend of mine has set his heart on an M249 and asked my adcice on which one to look at.
I know AEGs and pistols but don't pay that much attention to the threads on support weapons. From memory I seem to recall that A&K is the way to go (plus I love the brand because of my LR300), but a quick search has shown me that you can buy STAR and TOP as well within the budget of £300ish that he's looking to spend (I'm think CA and above is outside his price range).
So which is the M249 that he should be thinking of investing in?

Re: Which M249?
I say get an A&K, and if you need to upgrade it. I had an A&K M60 and its range was fantastic, didnt need to upgrade it although the FPS was way over my sites limit(420 fps full auto). Its also full metal which is a bit upside, and it can also take M4 mags like the real thing....although it is a bit pointless.
I wouldnt get the star simply as its all plastic, and to me if your going to have an LMG you need a full metal one...Ive also heard some iffy things about performance from it.
TOP I havent actually had a go with so cant say anything on that.
If your mate can afford it go for a CA....really are great. An alternative to this is to get an A&K M249 and put a CA gearbox in it, that would be just as good I reckon.

alot on here seem to favour the classic army model

Forgot to mention, if you are on a tight budget I just changed the rubber and swapped the nub with a bit of a plastic from a byro pen, works a treat.

Re: Which M249?
A&K for sure if that is your budget, star is POOOOO, weighs less than a handgun and performance is pretty boring
my a&k (up for swap/sale btw ;P ) has performed well, build quality is good too, very heavy and meaty like it should be :P
CA is win, but £250 more than he has to spend

Re: Which M249?
To be honest I'm not entirely sure about his budget, I just doubt he wants to go for the big money brands.
Also, this is the same friend of mine who I was asking the TM MAC 10 appraisal for, so he might have that to part ex towards an M249 as well.
I've told him to get himself on this forum anyway and stop making me do all the legwork :D So hopefully he can have a look himself tonight.

Star & TOP are absolutely naff. Either get the A&K and sort the issues, or have a look around for a second hand CA, they can be had for around £300-£350

Re: Which M249?
My advice would be to wait until he has saved (much) more money and get the G&P but then I would say that as I own one.
Biased side of me aside I can say that the Star (a good make normally) feels like its made out of recycled tupperware and is nasty. It really is only an option if you cannot save for something better although they seem to work okay.
Sir we are f&cked we are surrounded. Son we are not f&cked we are in a target rich enviroment.
