Re: Weapon/kit advice for a noob...
Just another thumbs up for the ESS Ice 2.4s
Used them since I started. Also tested them at 10ft at 350fps and the BB just left a wipeable smudge on impact. Edit: Although saying that I've just read the instructions and it states: "Do not use in the sports of Paintball or Airsoft." Weird.
Oh yeah, nice pair of gloves and some awesome boots will do wonders.
Knee pads are another good thing to have but are not necessary.

Re: Weapon/kit advice for a noob...
Thanks for the breakdown, Jonny.
The vest I already have, that cost £15. Some fingerless gloves turned up yesterday, they were about a fiver, plus I managed to get a pair of the ESS glasses for £15 plus a few quid delivered, they should be arriving soon. I've got a few other items on the way too. Although the purple camouflage combats would probably make me look like a right pillock if I turned up to a skirmish wearing them. :D
Edit> Thanks for that Sherbs. I suspect the "not for airsoft" disclaimer is American legal protection. I looked into the
ballistics test
that they are rated as exceeding and that's a 0.15 caliber, 5.8 grain, T37 shaped projectile at a velocity of 640-660fps. And what with them being 2.4mm polycarbonate, I doubt an airsoft BB would get passed them even at point blank.
Boots I already have. Going to be getting kneepads too.

Aye I think they would take a point blank hit easily. =)
Either way I am still wearing them, I am not gonna lose any sleep over that.

5.8 grain is 0.375 grams. The way I look it, they stop a shaped projectile that's a nudge over 50% heavier and twice as fast as a airsoft BB round. I'm not concerned. :D

Re: Weapon/kit advice for a noob...
Holy thread revival Batman!
I've done a couple of skirmish days at Dragon Valley now and I'm going again on the 23rd Jan and sorting out site/UKARA membership. RIFs, here I come!
Anyway, I've changed my mind since I last posted on this matter. Several people have said that the kit I wear has a sort of Kosovan militant/terrorist-ish look to it, which I don't mind as it's a bit different from the norm. The kit is black boots, black combats, green rollneck top, green aircrew jacket, black Viper SAAV and black fingerless gloves, seen
here
(excuse the mis-matched hat). As I'm not planning on spending a fortune on kit and what I have works for me at present (save possible mag compatibility issues with the vest) so I'm thinking of getting weapons around the terrorist/militant theme.
The obvious choice would be an AK-47 and it would work, but I'm not overly fussed on it. The picture above shows me with DV's new ICS AK-74s. They are brand new and that was the first time they'd been used in anger. Lovely bits of kit I thought. They're a possible choice, although I'd probably opt for the IMI Galil AR over something from the AK family as they're a bit less common. Another possibility would be the H&K UMP, which is used by the Serbian military, but I'm not sure on that one.
So, I'm looking for suggestions for some weapons that aren't all that common and would fit in with the appearance I'm aiming for. I'm no weapons buff so there may be something else out there that will fit my requirements. Budget is likely to be the same as previously discussed, although I would pay a little bit more for something that isn't dog egg.
Go! :D
EDIT:- Incidentally, the ICE 2.4s have take a few direct hits to the lens with no marks left. My only issue is them steaming up when I run about like a pillock.

Re: Weapon/kit advice for a noob...
If you're going for a terrorist/militant look and want an AK, then it needs to be a wood model, all the way!
AKs are quote common, but consider the Romainian AIMS for something AK with a twist, although I like the idea of the Galil
UMPs are nice, 2 of my team mates have the G&G model and they've both been very reliable and solid. The silencers make a massive difference too. Only issue with them is mags. You either get hi or lo caps and mag pouch choice is a bit limited due to the size
Other options could be;
Something in the G3 family. Probably not the SG1, but an A3 or A4 model
FNC - Possibly not European terrorist/militant use but certainly gets used in Africa
M16A1 - Plenty of old M16s were sold off and have found their way into terrorist hands. Ok, so it's an Armalite, and in that vein is as common as, but the model itself isn't common
VZ-61 Scorpion - Ok, a bit limited on range/use due to being pretty much an AEP, but for CQB would be great
Mac10 - As above
Uzi - Again, somthing compact but works with a terrorist/militant loadout. Hard to find that's for sure, but if you want something uncommon...
Edit: Just checked, and a certain HK retailer has the Uzi in stock, so seems you can still get them

I'd definitely have a wood model if I went for an AK. Not sure on the AIMS, it just looks like an AK with a foregrip.
Hadn't thought of the mag issue with the UMP. I doubt they'd fit into the SAAV I have, although neither would anything curved like the AK mags, so a new vest may well be required at a later date. I would probably just buy something with a hicap mag anyway and buy mid caps at a later date.
FNC - Not a bad looking rifle that and probably not all that common. Not sure if it fits in with the look though. A consideration. Another possibility along similar lines would be the
FN FAL
.
M16A1 - I should have said, nothing Armalite. Far far too common for my liking. And they all look the same to me. :D
VZ-61 Scorpion - I do quite like those. Nice and compact. I might get one at a later date as a backup weapon or something to use for CQB.
I'm also pretty much settled on my pistol choice too. I shall probably be getting a Five-SeveN.

Re: Weapon/kit advice for a noob...
ESS ICE 2.4s are brilliant, and as for safety, they are rated up to military spec ballistic impact (normally .22 caliber) so they are more than man enough for the job, my advice kit and gun wise is the same as everyone else really, try what you can and if something just screams at you and all you can do is think about it when you are after buying one, or its your most searched item, that I find is the one you really want. You dont need expensive gear to do this, so dont worry about 120 quid chest rigs and stuff, a 25-30 quid vest with pouches will do the same job and cost less, find combats in surplus stores where its cheap, then you have more to spend on mags and a gun.
As to UKARA, it does say 3 meets
in not less
than 2 months so its saying 3 meets in more than 2 months but less than 12.
section 24 of the 1968 Act
Supplying imitation firearms to minors
1)It is an offence for a person under the age of eighteen to purchase an imitation firearm
2)It is an offence to sell an imitation firearm to a person under the age of eighteen.

Thanks for the input. My initial post (and a few after that) have some incorrect information in them. Unfortunately, I cannot edit.
As stated in my post when I bumped the thread, I've got the ICE 2.4s and they've taken a couple of direct impacts during use with no marks left on them at all. The biggest issue I have is them steaming up.
And for UKARA, I'm aware of the 3 games in a period greater than 2 months requirements. My first game was 21st Nov and my third game is on 23rd Jan, which fulfills that. I've bumped the thread as I'll be looking to buy a RIF and my requirements have changed a bit.

Re: Weapon/kit advice for a noob...
A wood AK is simply the best, they just seem to look fine with any kit or camo
you said a thew posts above that you'd opt for a Galil over somthing from the ak family. id just like to point out that the Galil is based on the Valmet which is based on the AK

I agree, an AK does look the nuts and suits the look I'm after to a tee. In
this pic
, I'm wearing the same kit as the previously linked pic, but using a CYMA AK-47 instead. I do like the AK, but it's a bit too common for my liking.
I'm also aware of the Galil origins. Being pedantic, Valmet is the name of the manufacturer, Rk 62 is the rifle you're thinking of which is, as you correctly stated, originally based on the AK-47 and is the basis for the Galil. I do like the Galil because it looks just as much the part as the AK (especially the ARM version, which I'm warming to), but is different enough to not look like an AK (if you get what I mean). :D
I can see me getting a Galil. It seems to crop up a lot. :D

I know, Starscream is selling it. He's a player at my local site and has it advertised on our forum. Nice bit of kit, but a bit more than I was looking to pay initially I think. I'll see how it pans out, if he's still got it next month and my car hasn't shit its knickers, I might see if he'll take an offer.
