ok people a friend is looking at an ics m4, i have a jg m4 and an army l85, need some advice on mags and which ones will fit all three guns, if this is a daft question resulting in me looking like a newb as all mags might fit.

This may not be true. When it comes to magazines, its a trail and error affair. If you want a reliable metal magazine, try classic army M4 mags. If you want plastic magazines, MAG. And also you have magpull mags. The magazines I use in my M4 ( King Arms VLTOR M4 VIS ) are the classic army M4 mags, never had a problem since I started using them
