Lipo Charging...
17 August, 2011, 14:42
I know Lipo has been done to death in the past, and i have tried searching.
Just got some new lipo batteries and a new charger. Cant understand a thing about it all. (I am not very technical!) Running 7.4v 1100mAh 15c lipo batteries, what current should then be charging at? Sorry for such a silly question, but i dont want to feck it up with 2 brand new batteries and a brand new charger too.

Re: Lipo Charging...
Thank you very much!
Just to confirm, that for a standard charge or a balance charge?

No worries. You'd be hard pushed to do any huge amount of damage charging!

Re: Lipo Charging...
nothing much more than 2A or so and you should be fine, i prefer trickling at about .20 / .25 but thats just a personal preference

Balance charge.
Recommended charge for a lipo is 1C so in this case up to 1.1A. Personally, if you're not in a rush, I'd go with 0.5A

Sorry missed that last bit. Balance charge. Always balance charge unless you're in a rush. Other people use lower ratings but I charge at 1a because my charger cuts off after 2 hours and I don't know how to change that!

Re: Lipo Charging...
Haha ive just had a look at mine and it cuts off after 120 mins also. I know how to change mine though!
So in a rush, 1a, plenty of time 0.5a, always balance charge. Beautiful, thank you everybody! Thread can be closed now!

Dont think you can close these ones!
Worth noting, make sure that you attach the balance cable when balance charging, and make sure the settings are right for the battery.

Re: Lipo Charging...
Nope, i cant... Needs a mod!
Erm... Balance cables? You mean slinging the battery into the little 3 pin port on the side of the charging unit just isnt all i need to do?
I really need to get a grip of my airsaoft termanology..

Plug in output lead (red and black)
Plug in balance tab (3 leads ending in small white block)
Charge at your desired rate.
Job done
What charger are you using?
Im sure the Imax and Turnigy wont let you charge lipos without the balance tab attached (might be wrong because ive never tried it)

I'll leave it open for now, as lipo questions always get asked and this thread might get reused

Re: Lipo Charging...
Turnigy charger. Its a great bit of kit but everytime ive tried to charge it it says connection not there. Must be the balance cable
Will post back once ive given it a blast to see if it makes a difference. Then time for a discharge / recharge on both of them i think. Considering they are both spankers batteries, i dont think i can do any harm in a full discharge and recharge to ensure voltage is balanced out between cells?
Edit: Second page of the instructions - How to connect your batteries up...
Deeeer......
Second edit: And with that, it works. Low voltage at the minute, so discharge is redundant. Balance charge commenced, and battery placed in burn proof bag. (Just to be safe!)
Again, thanks very much guys, you have all been (as usual) excellent!

Re: Lipo Charging...
No need to discharge lipos and you shouldn't let them drop below 2.8v per cell either. The balance charge sorts out the balancing (hence the name
)
I charge mine in an ammo tin, just in case
