Looking to start a project

Hi,

Im looking to create a new load out so the best place to start is a new gun.
I have been thinking and looking around but a nice project M4 seems to be a good place to start as I have worked on many things from cars to computers but never a
gearbox.

My question is what is a good M4 to start with and where would be good to start upgrading it?
