Good Idea To Paint My Pistol ? With What Though ?
27 November, 2011, 10:06
Hi folks, I made a swap on a forum for an M109 pistol ( basically an M9 with a rail and an AUTO feature
) I love it ! Used it yesterday on its first skirmish and it kicked azz :p
Me being me... I am never happy with something just being stock so I have taken off the barrel, trigger, mag release button, trigger slide lever, and slide release lever to remove the paint and polish it up using wet & dry and using a metal buff to get a mirror finish :comeandge
i have also ordered new grips from the US which look very nice ( only £16 too )
I know, I know...... im getting to the main question now :p
The pistol at the minute is gun metal grey and as nice as it is, I think it would look farrrrrrr better in black.
I have done a search and found a few threads on plastic painting ( forgot to add that the M190 it is a metal pistol ) but I would assume that differant paint would be used.
Would it be better to paint over the origanal gun metal paint and use it as a primer or strip the pistol down to the bare metal and repaint with a few coats ?
I have seen that " THE INTERNET " toys with the fact of using DURACOAT from Homebase but what do you guys think ?

Use some wet/dry paper to rough up the original paint, then get Krylon paint, give it a few coats, then wet/dry it with the finest you can find with plenty of water to make it a smooth finish.
Simples.

My opinion, save your money. Krylon is overpriced and no matter how you treat your pistol after the paint WILL get scratched.
Buy the colours you want from Halfords and spray away after sanding. Then wet and dry to finish. Same deal as the Krylon, just you save yourself a small fortune and can then laugh at those who smell their own farts whilst talking about their magpul'd M4s and Krylon paint
If it is good enough for touching up car panels, why not a toy?

One thing, unless you want a VERY matt finish don't use the Halfords camo finish black.

I used their own brand Matt Black, and avoided the camo stuff as it was more for an inferior product?!
The own brand matt black is excellent as long as you do 3 or more coats.

I used plastikote from b&q, stays on sanded and unsanded aluminium like a dream, and looks really good when you wear it down. Coated my g36 (aluminium front end) for 3 years.

I'd agree with Jonny Lovegood about the Plasticote paints. I find the satin finish paint gives an overall better look and is slightly harder wearing than the matt finish paints. One caveat if you've completely sanded the frame down to bare aluminium you're better off using a specialist aluminium primer (Plasticote do one I think its colour code is 604, just google-fu it) as standard primers are intended for use on steel/iron. And as with all things paint oriented the quality of the finish is proportional to the amount of time and care you put into the preparation of the surfaces. And remember it's better to have 3/4 thinner dust coats than one thick coat.

Thanks for all that advice folks. I had been googling the Krylon stuff but I after hearing the other options about Halfords stuff I think I will give it a go first as I have a can of it already from a job few months ago.
Update on the shiny bits. What do you reckon ?

Ok, I was off work today so I spent about 3 hours with my Dremel and a wire brush attachment to completly strip the pistol back to its bare metal. I decided to go for the Kryol black camo paint ( £7 at my local airsoft shop ) and boy am I glad I did ! The spray nozzle that it has is a dream to work with and the paint itself is lovely and thin. Compared to the Halfords paint that I have previously used which is very thick when it comes out of the clumsy white nozzle. I spent around an hour or so ( and a very sore head, NOTE TO SELF.... ventilate shed well next time ! ) building up about 5 coats and then let it completly dry. I have now hung the parts up in the hotpress and I will leave it there for a few days to bake / cure

Question is...... Should I hit it with a couple of coats of clear laquer to seal it or would that make it look stupid ?

I wouldnt as I like the worn affect, my Race Gun is a mess now lol
My advice, if you want to protect it use matt lacquer and keep the coat(s) as thin as possible, as even matt lacquer adds a shine

I used the same stuff on my m9 slide and you couldn't tell the difference between that and the frame which was the standard black

Will do tomorrow. I have the bodies painted and nearly all the other bits polished ( only trigger and mag release button left to do ) and need to wait on the grips coming from the US but I will use the old ones till then. I might use a matt laquer, not sure, I will do a test on a piece of welding tin with Krylon on it and see how it looks.
