Offers Should Be Made My PM Only?!
18 April, 2010, 19:57
Am I the only one who gets annoyed by some fool coming on, bumping up 10 or so threads for offers of half what the seller wants?
It makes no sense for anybody to post an offer.
1. If it's a crap offer, you are just spamming up the forums.
2. If it's a good offer, you are just telling the world to offer £5 more and lose you the sale.
It's just stupid really. If you come across a 2 week old thread, why not make a cheeky offer. But if you bump up the thread with "will you take £XX" you just asking for somebody to beat you to it with the full asking price.

Re: Offers Should Be Made My PM Only?!
Do you think there should be a system in which only the original post can be made. So offers are made through PM and mods are PM'ed to alter/close the thread. Also for 'bumps' the thread could have an automated 'bumping' thing where it appears on new posts every 3 days. Sure this may not have been created but im just saying.

Re: Offers Should Be Made My PM Only?!
I am not sure about locking the thread straight away. I have put large amounts of kit up one day and the next day have cleared out more and have more kit to put up. I don't want to have to PM a mod 3-4 times a day to add stuff, change stuff, add pics etc.
Plus then we would probably need a dedicated Sales Mod to sort it all out.
But I agree, I think you should have to make offers via PM, 1 to not bump a thread unnecessarily and 2 to keep it private. I have seen some very stupid public made offers and I am not at all surprised when the OP says "umm no chance mate". If done via PM it can be done privately and there is a mean for further communication there too.

We used to have dedicated sales mods
But I agree with JAG, putting offers in the sales threads is just silly, as is asking if it's still for sale an hour after the thread's been posted. Surely those sort of posts can be kept to PM as well?

Re: Offers Should Be Made My PM Only?!
Agree totally. Im not a rude person, but it tests my patience when someone even pms me and offers me £50 below the asking price within twenty minutes of posting it up.
The best one I've ever had was when I sold my hurricane eotech for £75, someone told me he'd '£20 because you can get eotechs off ebay for that much' and linked me to a cheapsoft one... GRRRRR!

Yeah I've noticed, you do seem to attract a lot of those

Re: Offers Should Be Made My PM Only?!
I agree and disagree, There are a lot of posts that could be sent privately. In regards to the bumping side, Users would go from posting "would you take £xx for this too "PM'd with offer" still bumping the thread. Users do like to make it known, that they have made an offer first. It also seems that some Users do not like just leaving it to chance that their pm will get seen and read, if they did that they would not need to post anything, on the classifieds. It should be noted that Users who come on and repeat posts the same offer, on multiple threads will a lot of the time end up getting a message from me (I find it annoying as well), and there is no way that they could buy all the items the offered on, if the sellers said yes.
Locking the Threads, hmmm this was discussed before, No I don't think you would need a dedicated sales mod as I spend around 6 hours plus a day Modding the classifieds, and the time saved from not having to merge, delete, and Remind users. would be more than adequate to edit lock and check new post for the template. However I do not see that being a popular choice with the multitudes.

Re: Offers Should Be Made My PM Only?!
Easy, not allowed to say "PM'd" either.
If somebody does not respond to a PM they are ignoring you or missing the big notification. If they are missing, they not going to check the thread.
It's not like people sending offers via post. PM's don't go missing.....

Not sure if that was sarcasm or genuine. Never the less, I made my comments based on the fact that there at least 3 threads in this sub forum, about PM's going missing and or failures of the PM systems.
anyway I will say no more on the matter and I will alert the admin to the question.

Re: Offers Should Be Made My PM Only?!
I have always thought of the Sales section of this forum as a notice bored in a shop window. Once you have posted your sale thread that should be the end of it, until it is closed because the item/s have sold.
Automatically locking threads will create a lot of confusion amongst other forum users and infrequent users to this forum, as they will see a locked thread and think the item is gone or the thread is old.
Posting in a sales thread that you have made an offer on X item was/is allowed because it notifies other forum users that there is an interest on the item, and that they would have to be quick to gather funds or come up with a better offer (without starting an auction).
With regards to the few cases recently of users posting up ridiculous offers in sales threads please report them (as you have been) and a mod will review that user and make a decision if they are unfairly bumping classified adds. (A sale that has been going since January is more likely to accept an offer than a sale started yesterday)
I have been thinking about the next "step" for the classifieds section for a long time, and there may be changes made in the near future, and new rules may be put in place for it.

I was being serious! If we removed all the times somebody has clicked "Preview" instead of "Send" & then navigated off the page. Then all the lies of "No I didn't get your PM" for the too busy to reply..... We'd probably not have any "missing".
I just don't get it really, it's in the buyers best interest to keep the thread low down the page as possible, thus fewer offers to compete with! The only people who seem to post on threads with offers, are those who are posting on half dozen other threads, trying to stretch their £70 budget to buy a PTW....
Presumably they don't PM, because it would take too long to spam an individual PM to each seller. Much quicker to post "yo m8, u take £70 rite?" on every thread in sight!
Auto-locking is probably a bit far, sometimes sellers miss genuine information. Therefore if somebody asks a legitimate question on the thread, fair enough.
