Give me feedback please.
7 October, 2010, 19:54
Well. I've been technical advisor for a little while now. The idea being mostly to weed out the rubbish that gets posted in there. I'm fine with that. I think I know a fair amount about certain things, and other bits I don't know about, I don't interfere with.
What I want to know is, where do I stop. I'm not going to be the one giving all the technical advice on this forum, and I certainly don't want to discourage other people from giving tech advice. However, I feel like it's kinda my job, to stop the people asking the questions from getting uneducated answers, especially where someone recommends an expenditure that I just don't see as necessary. This thread:
http://www.zeroin.co.uk/showthread.php?t=72169
provides a prime example of where I feel I need to jump in and say something, but I also feel like I'm kinda overstepping my bounds, and being rude to Evillamas.
So do you guys feel like I'm being heavy handed there? Do you think I should allow that sort of advice to go unchallenged, when I believe it's bad advice, or do you think I should step in as I have done?
Your opinions please.

Re: Give me feedback please.
well people are going to stop posting in the sections mate
as the mods took it to themselves appointing people to certain places
so no offence mate but we will post fewer and fewer in the specific sections
but your doing a good job ...

Re: Give me feedback please.
Step in mate, If you have a different opinion to someone, voice it, let the person asking the question decide who's right.
(By the way you are right in my opinion)
Unfortunately on a forum you cannot really prove you are right, so it is up to the OP to make a decision based on the information given.
You have been given a title that means you are meant to advise on technical issues. So do it, and don't feel bad about it
And I hope this post buys me enough credit to not be shot with that nasty VSR next skirmish :D
I will be at the NAE 27th-30th August and replies to messages may be slow, bear with me!

Re: Give me feedback please.
TBH mate if there weren't people like you giving informed advice then the newbies or people who aren't so technically minded have no where to go.
I see what your saying but it's good advice and i'm sure he's better of for it :D

Mate jump in all you like i say.
If it were my advice that was bad i wouldnt mind being put right.
Same goes if i was given bad advice that would cost me in the long run i would want someone to step in.
Ive seen you give a lot of good sound advice, keep it up.

Re: Give me feedback please.
No offence to be taken, not much
qualifies
your advise (or anybody elses for that matter!) over somebody elses!
As with most things airsoft, the number of variables means there is so much "opinion", and hardly any
proven
fact.
I'd suggest the mods have placed you in the role, as a nod to the fact they believe you have good knowledge. This being reflected in your title.
So I'd shy away from physically deleting other peoples words, and post your take when necessary. It is up to the end user to believe what they chose, based on the information placed infront of them.

Re: Give me feedback please.
Jag has an extremely good point, but don't worry, all technical advice is always welcome, hence why people use this forum's pages, mainly what a community does eh?

No offence taken. This is exactly the sort of response I was after.
As it happens, I don't think I've deleted anyone's opinions yet. Only spam posts and a thread hijack or 2. I wouldn't get rid of advice, good or bad. I much prefer to explain why I'd do the opposite. Which hopefully goes some way to helping the OP, as well as the person giving what I'd call bad advice. But I do have a bit of a temper problem some nights. You can tell how long it's been since I've had a smoke by the tone of my posts.
Anyway, thanks for the replies guys. I'll try and keep a sensible hat on as much as possible. And try my best not to discourage people from offering advice.
And CK. You don't get any benefits for brown nosing mate :P
If you've got more to say, keep it coming.

Re: Give me feedback please.
I thought it was a bit heavy, but, the advice was sound and you were on the right lines in informing the OP. To be honest, I think reading it you weren't personal but by saying that there was nothing wrong with waltzings post, you implied there was lots wrong with Llamas post.
This could, on a forum be taken personally. Leaving that last sentence out, as I felt it had no relevance to your advice, would have been a little more diplomatic.
I do agree with guard though, if advisors are seen to be jumping in everywhere, people will stop posting advice they believe to be helpful, for fear of being made to look an idiot.
As said above, informed opinions are what is needed, not disparaging remarks against your advice. There's a fine balance to be struck when answering in written word, so as not to offend.

Re: Give me feedback please.
A lot of people post what they think should be done to solve a problem, but rarely elaborate on WHY.
If people went into WHY they have advised such a course of action, it allows the person that asked in the first place to learn a little and make their own minds up... Job done...

Exactly whay I was going to say! Waltzin's post had lots of information in it, where as EL's post was basically, 'get this because it's the best' with no reason behind it. For example he suggested getting a Systema hop and then goes on to say he doesn't know if it will fit as he has no experience with G36s. So why give that advice in the first place? Many times I see people recommending Systema for no other reason than they think it's the best because that's what everyone says, with little reason based on fact. Where as waltzin goes on to say he's always had good results with TM rubbers and BlackPython barrels. At least he's basing his argument on his own experiences.
I do agree with guard though, if advisors are seen to be jumping in everywhere, people will stop posting advice they believe to be helpful, for fear of being made to look an idiot.
Having been on airsofting forums for many years, I actually wish that were true in many cases, but I seriously doubt it. There seems to be an obsession by many people in that they just HAVE to post something

Re: Give me feedback please.
Tottally agree with most of these posts, and why, because they are all, explanitive and informative, which is exactly what evillamas reply wasnt, so yeah only give the advice if you have experienced the issue put forward or have good knowledge on it, i dont think you where to heavy dope on a rope, i think you just got a little fire in your belly as you thought the same as what we have all just mentioned, and further more your just doing the job designated to you.

I think you've been really responsible. Many would not interject, but I feel here it was necessary and right for you to do so.
That post sounded like it was made by a random Systema sentence generator.

Re: Give me feedback please.
Thanks again guys.
I think I'll pursue the cause of explanation over "you're wrong" more in the future. After all, I'm far from infallible myself... I like to think my greatest quality is my humbleness. In fact, it's exactly what makes me better than everyone else.
