Re: Soviet Union Cold War loadout - AK74?
I understand that what I'm on about is a bit unclear, as yes, the SU was bloody massive indeed.
It's the difficulty of actually getting hold of the gear. Me being me, i'm a bit unsure of buying kit from Ukraine (Seems to be the major area where most of it is, or so i've found out)

Well, like we've already said, if you actually told us what kit you were actually after someone might be able to help you and tell you where to get it.

The vast majority of those kit sales are based form Ukraine as you said-however sovietarmystuff is meant to be on the level-Ive known people to purchase from there with no hassle. Also trident military and red soldier are meant to be OK.

Re: Soviet Union Cold War loadout - AK74?
depends what your money is like too, ebay is good for picking stuff up, my usual soviet kit...
Bekas birch BDU set £40
Telnyashka £12
M60 helmet £15
boots £15
chest rig £20
belt £10
ak74 with 8 mags about £180
(and a real steel 74 bayonet £25, but its just for show)
just shy of 300 quid would tool you out, gun and all!
BUT, thats the very basic kit, as skarclaw said, once you start you'll see more more you'll want, tis a bitch on the bank account!

Re: Soviet Union Cold War loadout - AK74?
For an afghanistan era loadout you are looking at;
"afghanka" uniform, I think $100 is pretty reasonable, having said that you can get lucky and get it a bit cheaper, I'd be surprised if you saw it go above $150. Another issue is sizing, if you are of the fatter build or like me skinny and tall it will be hard to get a uniform that fits. The webbing is normally quite reasonably priced, you can get a chest rig, the 2nd gen (not used in afghanistan) is fairly easy to get and not badly priced, but to get an era correct one will be harder and more expensive. Depends how anal you want to be. You can also get a chicom rig which is about 15 quid. RD54's are cool but again hard to find and can run expensive, I managed to get mine (damaged) at a pretty good price so its not all bad. Personally I wouldn't worry with armour.
Take a look at;
http://www.sovietairborne.com/Uniforms.html
Thats kit for vdv (airbourne troops) but its not massively different from an infantry bloke.
Be prepared to wait to get what you want, and ordering from outside the UK is about as close to essiential unless you are gifted with knowing the right people, a forgiving wallet and lots of luck! Good stuff on ebay so you can check feedback, here are some sellers you may want to bookmark and check every so often;
http://stores.ebay.com/The-Russian-Source
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZvictorsbest
(used this guy, he is good to go)
http://stores.shop.ebay.com/VLADIMIR...__W0QQ_armrsZ1
(same as above, although some have issues with him, for small stuff I wouldn't worry)
