I like that idea, it would make sense for a soldier with a longer rifle to carry a small sub-machine gun in case they got too close

Umm, no it wouldn't otherwise it would have happened.
OP you've had some answers as to what are authentic Nam era loadouts and they don't fit with what you want. How about just wearing what you want, use what you want and forget trying to justify it? Just use what you want and be happy...

Right to put it too rest!
Mac10's where not used by US in the forces IN THE FIELD...
No if buts or maybe's !!!
They were used in training to become familiar in case they picked one up from the Laotian drug smugglers

Re: Help! nam' style
just decided to do some reading on it and some places it says they were used in POW snatches and by SOG for urban enviroments etc, i culd also understand using the silencer for these reasons.
However, one could argue that its an impression of a certain era and one could say if it was in that war on this side these are the weapons i'd use and the kit its not always about copying a loadout from a pic which is why when people say you need your pouches in thsi order its just daft

Re: Help! nam' style
I was researching the use of thompsons in nam, and found a great forum of veterans talking about what they carried.
A lot of guys would trade or buy extra guns with vietnamese forces/civilians when they were over there.
So its entirely possible to use any weapon that was available in nam around that time.
Of course getting hold of a mac 10 would of been quite rare, unless you had loads of money possibly.

....Which would rely on the ARVN having MAC10s in the inventory/on the shelf waiting to spirited away for a case of Johnny Walker- Which they weren't.
What was available was- from an SMG standpoint- was either a Thompson or M3, both of which the ARVN had piles of via USAID and left overs from the French occupation
BUT- this is a key point- SMGs were not held in high regard by US forces full stop, and definately not by those in the LRRPs/SF community with a choice on their main weapon. In the book Charlie Rangers, both writers were offered M3s and Thompsons but both passed due to the poor penetration of large pistol rounds through thick jungle cover....You can logically assume that if offered a MAC10, regardless of it's increased ROF, they would not have taken it for the same reason- the identical .45ACP round it chambered.
Now the caveat on that is some specialised troops did favour the 'Swedish K' with the supressor, despite being 9mm the quad-stack 40 round mag partially mitigated for this....There's a few shots of CIA operatives in civilian clothing with Beretta M12s, so that's a very slim possibility....But using a MAC10 as your main weapon for a field-based vietnam war loadout?- No, not accurate.
But, as stated previously, Just pick some gear you like and use it with that....This is the risk attempting to 'bend' a period to fit a weapon- it rarely works
And when it comes to getting stuff period accurate
Always remember that the plural of 'anecdote' is NOT data

Re: Help! nam' style
I'm with demoncase. with some exceptions submachineguns were mostly used by the indigenous troops early war before the sixteen came in as M14s were just too big. and they had a load left over.

If demoncase says it isn't legit, it's not legit.
