It's just US woodland & ALICE gear... I wouldn't really call it anything in particular. I mean wouldn't they have worn body armor when deployed?

        Andy's got it anyway.

Nope, pre 2000 body armour was rarely issued by western forces and what was issued was more for protection against frag' rather than bullets

Huh, I see. I thought they used those crappy old flak vests.
I don't know jack about pre OIF gear.

CBA if i remember correctly was just to keep your body parts in one place when they went round picking up the pieces.

Going by the weapon I would say that was around 2002. That is a Block 1 SOPMOD M4A1.

Looks like US ranger on a training exercise, might be USMC.

The stock looks like an old one to me.
I cant see a Ranger tab on his cap which is what the Rangers are known to do.
                          He could be USAF?

You're right it's an oldschool stock with one of those big rubber butt pads.

I think it's more like early ninties than 2k's. SOPMOD dates back to '89.

Sure about that? The US only adopted the M4 as a weapon for the US armed forces in 1997. ALICE kit was still heavily in use during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

SOPMOD was originally started back in the late 80's early 90's however it didn't see release of Block 1 until 2005. My guess is that the weapons system you are seeing in the picture is from during the trial period.
