Can identify the Brit?
19 April, 2012, 07:51
Hi all,
Saw this video and wondered what unit the Brit was really from. Seems more likely RM or at a push SBS than SAS?
RM often do exchanges with USMC so that would explain it in my eyes but just wondering if anyone knew?
Apologies if this is old news

Hadn't occurred to me
Mainly due to my own lack of raff knowledge.

To be honest in that kit they could have been anyone mate. That clip caused a certain amount of merriment around the squadron

Re: Can identify the Brit?
From the research I have done it is RAF TACATAC. But I have also been told he is a shaky.
But he has a 10 inch C8 and later an SOHPC. Those 2 things alone mark him as something special, be its FAC or SF.

Re: Can identify the Brit?
hes definetly SF not SFSG because all SFSG where helmets and mutlicam/mtp. As meeting with a bootneck in afghan who was SFSG he had the long barrelled version of the C8 and also had multicam and the new mich helmet.
hes got the look of an SF i.e. SAS or SBS.

TACATAC - Tactical Air Traffic Control? what is that? But yes, if he is a FAC (Foward Air Controller) he could be a rock, or he could be an normal ATC guy (when I did PDT we were briefed by and ATC guy). Essentially the idea of the attachment is understanding the air picture better ie speaking the same language as the pilots and, more importantly, having the ability to think in 3D, controlling the Killbox around where the action is happening and being aware of everything from AWACS, UAV, heli attack and support, fast jets and any other thing that might be about.
Of course, the question is why is he hanging about with the Yanks when they have their own combat controllers. Hence the thoughts on the SF elementwho would have done the FAC trg.
Norin, are you a Rock?

Re: Can identify the Brit?
As I said, seems like Shaky to me but it's really hard to tell
Appears to be a PEQ2 on the C8? Didn't know UKSF used them (in fact have been told by fervent geardos that they don't)
Glad this has given people something to do
The GPMG appears to be an M240G (USMC issue) and the Canadians use a wooden furnitured MAG58?

They're wearing woodland MARPAT, so I'd say they were USMC

Re: Can identify the Brit?
If he is FAC I don't know why he would be there, but SBS were very pro joint ops early 21st century so... Also, as said before, RM and SBS/USMC and SEAL often do exchanges but RM tend to wear a mix of marpat and DPM/MTP and SEALs certainly used to wear their own stuff (assume it would be the same now with AOR1/2)
I would expect sf to keep their own rig because of familiarity etc
The Paraclete could be SF or SFSG?

Indeed, the pic I posted the guy is using the USMC SAM-R (basically a heavier barrelled M16 for the DMR role)
