Some strange finds in a job lot - Please help me ID them
23 July, 2013, 11:25
Hey guys I got two black sacks full of kit from a garage sale. Her husband is away in the middle east where he is a soldier. Some of the items in this bag are really strange...
DPM shirt (normal CS95 type) but has velcro arm patches as well as velcro closing arm pockets, with pull tabs. Never seen one like this before - anyone else?
US Tri colour shirt which also has the same pockets as above, without the pull tab.
US Tri colour shirt that has been cut and sewn onto an Under Armour vest to create a UBACS type thing.
Trunks, Mans, Thermal Base Layer (TANTAULUS) - black thermal boxer things
There are a few other bits such as some knee pads I've never seen (no label), some ESS goggles that have had the straps cut short and velcro added for fixing to a helmet I assume, some DPM shirts that have tape on the inside pocket with name and blood type and these shirts have also had a Silva pocket added to them with a velcro close tape at the top and press stud poppers on the shirt pockets, which have been sewn in at the side to make them a bit less bellows type and flatter.
Anyone else seen any of this? From what the lady said (and she didn't know a lot or say a lot) he works as an advisor to US forces in the middle east, but is British army.

Not sure why a British soldier would have US gear! Could be that her husband is just an airsoft player, and she just said afghan and it's easier to explain!

Brits often swap their stuff for US kit, and vice versa
Also, that US tri-colour has been used by Brit SF in the past, although I've never seen a UBACS made by UA, or any UBACS in it for that matter, as it wasn't issued anymore when UBACS became the thing to wear in hot & dusty places
It does sound like a bag of custom made/modded kit

The SF brand is Sure Fire, the torch manufacturer, so that's probably a pouch from one of their torches.
The tan pouches with the weird plastic tabs are from a survival vest made by "ultimate survival technologies". I believe they've seen use by some american flying units as a pilots survival vest.
The black velcro thing looks like it might have held a strobe in the central pouch, with the slot providing access to the switch.

My pleasure.
There's a video series on youtube where a chap goes through the contents of one of the survival vests (

Ahhh cheers. Anyone got any idea on the BH pouches and the UK issued copy?
Plus curious about the H harness with velcro closure... That H harness came with an AK pouch (part of the set) which holds 7.62 AK mags and is labled as such. Didn't know the US made AK pouches to issue!

The H Harness (and some of the pouches) appear to be older Eagle kit

That surefire pouch isn't for a torch it's for a can.

Can?
Also I think on looking closer some of these pouches may have been modified from their original form... The ones with the zips.
