Re: Gulf War 1 SAS
A good few US night parkas were also used (the grid pattern type)
Paint was usually emulsion (magnolia or similar) or in some cases model paint (Chris Ryan) which was bought from the Model shop on the main road into Hereford
Do not paint the whole gun , just use slaps or stripes !
Personally I got the same effect by dust coating with tan spray
The old beige shemaghs were also quite popular and NI gloves.
Later stages of the conflict most patrols wore dish dashas given to them by the locals as it got really cold
Rifles wise M16-A2 and A1 mixes , FN Minimi (old type) and several Car15 variants (727 a possibility although most car15s in unit armoury were a bodge of parts).
G3s, HK53s and old FNs were also not unheard of

Re: Gulf War 1 SAS
The smocks were the type issued to the SAS & LRDG in ww2. they must have been kicking around in H for years. even chris ryan was totally surprised that they were getting issued them! some even had zips up the front. Apart from the obvious books these books are Great for GW1 SAS pictures: Sabre Squadron, Victor2, Eye of the Storm, Soldier 5, SAS the illustrated history SAS the encyclopedia.
They also used US ALICE webbing- Dinger and Mike coburn had this- if you look closely at the b20 photo youll see dinger with the US ammo pouches. and in the doc the real bravo two zero you see the real webbing and there is a mix of UK and US webbing. Basically these guy got whatever they could get their hands on so its great for airsoft loadouts!

Re: Gulf War 1 SAS
agreed , the great thing about SAS loadouts (unitl recent times) was the fact the regiment mixed and matched kit as they wished .
Be warned however it is hard to carry off the look without looking like a new airsofters that has just mix and matched kit
The ww2 smocks were issued when B20 went out but the kit was continually updtaed in the short time the conflict went on ,especially once the US kit became easy to swap/pinch .
Cameron Spence did a good book on his exploits in GW1 too which is quite descriptive of kit in parts .
Working with a guy who deployed with them helped me with my loadouts , him and his missus were both mentioned in a few of the books too

Re: Gulf War 1 SAS
Yeah the kit was constantly changing as the war progressed. bear in mind that when B20 and the other two MSR patrols went over the border they were expecting a 'spring day in the UK' but it was Fucking not! thats why they had their desert dpm shirts under their smocks & almost froze to death. the fighting columns found this out too when they went across but because they could get through on the comms they initially got some Arctic smocks and trousers, mits and hats and were even issued with the brand 'Mounitain Equipment' jackets. you see alot of guys with these under and on top of smocks-they look like black snugpaks. then later the RSM got his hands on some of the local arab overcoats that the nomads would have worn because they were so warm-though id recommend not going for this look as even if you track a real one down you'll feel like a prick in your bath robe, different for the real guys obviously!
So long as you source some decent kit from the era and paint it up good enough you shouldnt look like a total novice at a site. Besides those in the know..will know a regiment man when they seem one! At least you wont look like the track suit brigade that show up with the hired gun! Fucking Hats! lol!

Look up these books too on SAS gw1: Victor 2, eye of the storm, SAS the encyclopedia, SAS the illustrated histroy & close quarter battle. All of these have some great shots of different patrols of the war and are great for loadouts! you should be able to see ALL the known photos of the conflict on the net though.

personally i would just get wall paint for the rig and just use a brand of spray that you can pick up in any DIY store , i doubt they had specialist paints like krylon back in 1991
In the actual bravotwozero op i heard the lads covered their Webbing in PVA glue and rolled it along the nearest beach before they went over there.
in the sean bean film they just had earth brown stripes on the m16s and minimis which i though was cool
but nice look mate its a bit out the regular
...'Covered them in PVA and rolled it along in the nearest beach?'
where did you hear that mate? Never heard that one! As that Scots guy on SAS jungle says.. i think you've been reading mickey mouse books. the tin or spray paint job seems more likely. theres Fuck all beaches near Hereford! look up the trailer of the real bravo two zero doc on you tube-they show you the Real minimis and Real webbing-and its clearly paint.

Re: Gulf War 1 SAS
Just got this through the post today-Bought as WW2 and wasnt made aware that the cuffs had been modified-would have been well miffed if it was for WW2 i wanted it!!!!!
Turns out that the smock was actually used by someone during Gulf 91 and the woolen cuffs are period modifications-FANTASTIC.
Been well used,no repairs just dirty and has faded to almost white.

No dramas. Funny thing is, this morning I found Barry davies illustrated history of the SAS.... only quality pic after the other for only £3.50! Didnt get it but it's well worth it for those who want to have a bit of inspiration for their kit...
