Special Reconnaissance Regiment?
18 January, 2012, 18:55
Heard about these guys on a BBC article. Says they were formed in 2005, and there is little more known about them.
Anyone else know about these lot? I can only assume they were as a response to the increasing publicity of the SAS/SBS?

Re: Special Reconnaissance Regiment?
Their role is similar to some of the roles the SAS and SBS did in the past. As far as I am aware they do long range patrols and work closely with the Intelligence Corps to supply them with a large ammount of the intel, paticularly involved with covert ops inside the UK.

Re: Special Reconnaissance Regiment?
I am assuming the Mark Urban article on Libya SF involvement?
A little of it seems somewhat simplified, but that is for the audience I guess.
The SRR was I believe formed in order to allow the SAS/SBS to concentrate on the more shooty side of things. Traditionally the SAS/SBS would indeed undertake recon missions, and I am sure still have the capability. My understanding though was that the reconnaisance role is becoming increasingly complex both practically and technologically and requiring very long deep deployments, which means more specialisation is logical. I believe alot of the reconaissance is in the form of human intelligence, building up contacts, understanding an area or dynamic and electronic intelligence gathering, more undercover rather than going out on patrols with binoculars. Proabally the most secretive and ambiguous UKSF unit nowadays (that is confirmed to exist anyhow).
I was interested by this E-Squadron stuff in the BBC article - might be somewhat fanciful, trying to add drama and excitement - but from Urban I am inclined to believe he wouldn't bullshit. Sounds rather like a reimagining of the Increment/CRW wing though.

No his book on UKSF in Iraq, its an interesting read , but if you expect action packed stories about each door kicking mission it may not be the read for you. However it touches on a bit of everything (politics, missions, general background) although a large section of it is devoted to how we built up such an effective Intel gathering operation with the yanks and MI6 back at home.
I was expecting a bit more description on their actual operations/kit as he mentions how we were originally ill equipped compared to Delta/CAG but we upgraded and adopted the kit you have become used to seeing.
However its a great outsider view on the whole situation.
Edit just realised that your post wasnt directed at me lol

Re: Special Reconnaissance Regiment?
There kit is whatever is required for recon, civilian attire to blend in with local populace, camo for varying environments so DPM, multicam, deserts, local camouflage.
They have the sandy beret with if memory serves a Spartans helmet with a dagger through it. They will also wear the uniform of their parent force, unusually they accept from all forces, ranks and rates, it's all down to the persons qualities.
They are heavily trained in CQB and pistol shooting so browning 9s, glocks, sigs and USPs mainly.
Role is to augment special operations with key intel and delicate intelligence operations.
They work in foreign and home territories and you can bet your bottom dollar they have a huge role on intelligence gathering in the UK against terrorist threats.

They wear civvies to work in the UK. On ops: civvies when cutting around Kandahar. On the ground; Either Cyre gear or suitable attire to blend in with the locals. As for webbing/armour/weapons/helmets same as rest of the SF. The best outfit I've seen was dish dash, paraclete, pakol, shemagh, big wooly over coat and C8 complete with a good tan and full on beard. I honestly thought he was a LEC until I saw the heat he was packing!
I think just like the SF 'loadouts' you've got so much latitude you could pull any spec off.

Re: Special Reconnaissance Regiment?
The SRR is the UK’s newest Special Forces (SF) Regiment but is built on over 30 years of experience on covert operations. The Regiment was formed in 2005 to provide additional specialist counter-terrorism skills and sits alongside 22 SAS and the SBS. The SRR’s role is to conduct covert surveillance and close target reconnaissance in hostile environments in support of the UK’s foreign, defence and security policy.

Re: Special Reconnaissance Regiment?
But they are not a frontline fighting force, they are also tier2 special forces. SAS and SBS is a tier 1 SF.
They augment the tier 1 guys, 8 times out of 10 they will be carrying pistols only as they can be concealed.
They spend more time training on different methods of pistol shooting than any other force in the world.
However they will be seen at times using M4s, AKs and even L85s, for the most part though, its pistols.

Re: Special Reconnaissance Regiment?
For the most part its pistols, they arent frontline fighting troops, they are trained for the just in case scenario. But as the name suggests the are Reconnaissance specialists.
