Re: East German (DDR) Cold War Loadouts
The fitting of a DDR ABC Suit carrier can confuse,
This should help.
If you thought there was only one kind of Water bottle in a ein/nein please,
The last to are different by only the addition of a piece of wire.
This is a trick that was done by the Panzertruppen, it was called a "Monkey".
It allowed the ABC suit and Winter Combat suit ( jacket and trousers) held together by your equipment yoke to be easily carried to your Panzer on an Alert, you would be wearing your work wear Black coveralls and would change into your FDA when you had time. I have set this up for Spring/Autumn as it has no "fur" collar fitted.
This is a little soldier fix that was permitted by some Grenztruppen Regiments, a Button is added to the Yoke for an Issue pocket Torch, you can see it on my earlier posts.
This is an example of the the Equipment used up until the late sixties.

It was issued in *tiny* quantities.
Observers from east germany to NATO manouvres in 1989 wore it.

Re: East German (DDR) Cold War Loadouts
These are my examples of UTV,
Which way up the Entrenching Tool is worn is a point of contention, the Bulgarian System that was developed with it indicates it was to be worn/set up like this, as do the few Images of UTV/ 1990 Dress regulations there are, so I follow them.
One of these pouches is for the MPi KM the one with all the accessories is for the MPi AK74 N
The Equipment was not worn by the Observers only the Garments of the 1990 Dress Regulations, the Grey belt was used in the Pictures of the time.

I just spotted that one too oddly. I picked up a repro Blumentarn camo suit a little while ago and have been meaning to get some more bit's for a complete get up.
The 'other' pouch (not the ammo one) looks sort of like the pouches used by the Germans during the later bit of WW2 on their A frame type webbing.
I've never seen a east German with that sort of set up. Mind you I've only been doing my research for a few hours when I get the chance. Concerning boots actually, did everyone wear the jackboot type ones?

I would say the unusual pouch is for a technical component rather than field equipment. The DDR produced Jack boot once you are used to it is serviceable footwear.

Re: East German (DDR) Cold War Loadouts
They are pretty awesome to be honest, the west german ones are comfier but both are fantastic in the field when you're used to them.
But... i think the 'willi sangar' para/airlanding unit had lace up ankleboots.
I'd have to check, memory seems to say they did but i cant be certain.
Oddly the rest of the NSWP forces were wearing ankle high buckle boots like late war us ones in black but the russians and east germans persevered with the jackboot up to the end in a lot of units.

Re: East German (DDR) Cold War Loadouts
I am a 60 but the one I bought is quite small and look stupid. I have seen some dealer advertising medium etc but wonder where they are getting the sizes from?

Re: East German (DDR) Cold War Loadouts
With the snow down i though it was a good chance to try out the NVA winter issue.
Although the rifle shuld be an MPIk this is pretty much a winter 'fighting load' with the NBC kit worn on the back.
Note boots are outside of the trousers as this was only allowed in bad weather where there was likely to be a lot of snow or mud, also of interest is the ersatz helmet camo, while it might look odd it's actually what the NVA did... just put strips of paper under the net.
Etool is an engineers pattern one too and *may* be upside down, i've seen it worn both ways, the other way round is really uncomfortable with an ABC suit on your back.

Re: East German (DDR) Cold War Loadouts
Gadge Europa,
To improve your NVA self, The Yoke must be between the strap and your neck, they were very strict on this point ( keeps to control a far from perfect Yoke). Your ABC Suit and Carrier is back to front, the long straps across the carrier face out, not against your back. If you want to be 100% correct with the improvement to your personal camouflage, use East German news paper….try it it works! ( DDR news paper can still be found in the lining of DDR hats, used to pack them out)
Get a thin white nylon string lanyard and attach it to the loop on your right arm and tuck it into the arm pocket for your Dosimeter a black string lanyard for the left arm would be for your March Compass.
The tucking in of your Winter FDA trousers into your boots would only occur if permitted by your Commander as a "comfort" .
The use of the Fj/pioneer Entrenching Tool is within norms if you are in need of the specialist tool, I would wear it more to the front on the right side of your bod. The Fj seemed to wear it reversed on their large special backpacks they jump with.
Some nice work in progress.
Respect.
