    Re: quick answer needed, (WOOFERS)

Right after a long hard search i managed to dig this up

"The green patch originates from the First World War when several Sherwood Forester battalions served in the same brigade. In total some
16 Forester battalions wore a Lincoln Green patch of various shapes to distinguish between battalions. This was later standardised as a green square patch behind the cap badge. The tradition has been carried forward into the Mercian Regiment with a 60x50mm patch on the beret which is Mandatory for all ranks. The patch is also reflected on the Regimental flags and sign boards."

    Hope this helps

    Ollie.

it was the Lincon Green patch bit I remembered, when I was in basic, in Lichfield, the guys in my section, 2 of them were woofers, we had to learn our units history, so we used to test eachother in the evenings whilst bulling boots!

I remember my one was about the reason why the Royal Welch Fusiliers are spelt "Welch", not Welsh (the Queen spelt it wrong in a letter eons ago, nobody had the bottle to correct her, so it stuck!)
Sadly, history like this is being lost with the recent units being amalgamated, well.... at least the Forresters kept thier green!
