Silencers On AEG's
7 December, 2009, 04:21
Hi Guys,
Do silencers work on a AEG or are they just for looks?
I am guessing they don't work very well as it is the internals makig the most noise not the muzzle.
Cheers
Fred

Re: Silencers On AEG's
Make a gun front heavy and pointlessly long in my opinion. Some people do use them to cover up barrel extensions but each to their. If you're in it for the looks though I can understand that.

Re: Silencers On AEG's
Most of the noise on an AEG comes from the gearbox. You're not going to notice much, if any, sound suppression from a silencer.
If you want quiet operation, you'll need some sound absorbing material around the gearbox. If it's just looks you're after, then anything you like the look of will do.

It's all about the looks. And protecting your inner barrel when you've found out that it's too long, and you have a spare silencer sat around. At least, that's my excuse...

Yay, someone else with the same opinion. Never could workout why people buy CQB length weapons just to stick on a silencer and make it M16 length.
Have to say though, the silencer on the G&G UMG works amazingly well, reducing the sound by 50% or more

Re: Silencers On AEG's
short barreled guns do benefit from it, m16 length guns barely do, sniper rifles (gas and spring) benefit from it. GBB rifles benefit from it hugely (read, makes muzzle report non existant on anything with an m4 length barrel, if its CQB you need a longer silencer for same effect)
At the end of the day, its personal choice, I dont see how a .2kg accessory makes the gun front heavy. but then again ive had a silencer on all of my guns since I started airsoft, so maybe im biased.

Re: Silencers On AEG's
I don't think I'd ever contemplate a silencer on the PSG - it's already 4 feet long!
I tried out an SR16 with silencer on at the weekend as well, it made no difference, I assume they are mostly for looks.

Re: Silencers On AEG's
My M4 used to have a long silencer on it to hide a lengthened 6.04 barrel that, well . . .looked like the pic below lol Started off wanting an M4 like that Delta sniper dude had on Black Hawk Down. It evolved into the uber "counter-snipe" rifle you see below! lol
Eventually Took off the silencer & cut down the barrel & added an M203, EoTech & 3X Magnifier to make it a bit more rounded. Still fires a good 50m's too . . .

Re: Silencers On AEG's
Thanks for all the help and info lads.
Would a silencer make any difference on a JG M4A1?

Re: Silencers On AEG's
Probably not to you when you remember the gearbox will be close to your head, it might make a slight difference to the person down range being shot at if you use single shots but I wouldn't expect to much of it.
I've found sticking to single shots - even without a silencer is the best bet to be stealthy, a burst of full auto is surprisingly easy to locate.

I'd agree totally with that, on Saturday I was always on semi and picking my shots wisely, a few lads were running around blasting full auto at distant targets when there was no need (not a chance in hell of hitting them), draws a ton of attention! That and then on top they were using flourescent green rifles! (assume they wern't registered or bought early).

Re: Silencers On AEG's
The only silencer i know that makes a decent difference in noise to an AEG is the laylax mode 2 surpessor. People mainly use them for looks, as i do myself. Or you can get a tracer unit
