Also watch out for cheap torches Lumen ratings as many are a bit suspect and a few are simply made up. My T20 is rated at 280 Lumens and is considerably brighter than many cheapo torches I've compared it against that have claimed to be 500ish Lumens.

lumens ratings can be funny things, even when they are honest. there are two ways of measuring them (most manufacturers use the one that gives higher figures, although it is not representitive of how much light comes out the front, because it is easier to perform the test), and even then, it can be deceptive.

for example, a torch with good focus and a tight beam can look a lot brighter than a wider beam, even with the same lumens rating.

Plus it measures total light output. because the human eye picks up some light wavelengths better than others, a torch can put out more actual light, but look dimmer because of the wavelengths it puts out to create the light.

Big thumbs up to the Solarforce range, used them quite a bit on my guns and they are great all round torches for the money you pay for them.

Personally id head on down to your local camping shop and buy a head torch. you can easily turn them on and off with a simply click of a button, there very bright and follow the direction of your head.
But best of all there far cheaper then overpriced airsoft torches, and fare more reliable then some of the cheaper airsoft torches on the market.

Ok I received the SolarForce L2 torch today and it looks and feels very sturdy and robust. If I am totally honest, I have to say ( compared to my SureFire eBay one ) that the beam is not as 'focused' as I thought it would have been. I understand that there is drop in replacements and maybe this is what I need ? I would like a beam that is more focused rather than spread out. I assume that although it comes with 3volt batteries, I can probably get away with the 3.7 volt in it too ?

that one takes 2 CR123s doesn't it? if so, a single 3.7 won't put out enough voltage. you'll need a module designed for 3.7v (also can be run on 1 CR123)

I like good kit, and I don't mind paying for it , but I don't want to be a mug either, and as Rainbow says, some thing like the surefire clones are easily good enough for our needs, we only want to light up rooms and dazzle people not burn their eyes out, so to pay bucket loads for a torch seems a bit over the top to me.

they make so many different modules, I can't say 100%, but it seems that most units made for 2 CR123s can take up to 9v, so you should be allright.
but when you get it, you can unscrew the head, and take a look at the led module. the solarforce modules have a label with the voltage rating on it.

Torch strobe modes are not engineered to cause epileptic seizures.

1 in 4000 people are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy and torch manufacturers avoid the high threat frequencies and often incorporate a strobe frequency break to lessen the odds even more.

It is yet again one of those myths that do the rounds frequently. Can it happen? Yes of course it can. Equally someone can fall down a hole and break their neck.

I am a fan of the M7 and P7 Lenser, though having seen a couple of the new Klarus torches in action, I would probably end up spending the money on one of them now. As much as I love my Lenser products, the Klarus are better featured, brighter and over all better thought out.

When looking at Lumens figures, bare something in mind. Chinese makers and sellers greatly exaggerate the output of their products. My 250 or so honest Lumen Lenser torches are much brighter than my 500 Lumens Chinese effort.

Some lights will take a 3.7v CR123, some won't. If it states it takes a 18650 then it will be fine. If not, then you run the risk of damaging it. The issue being that the 3.7v batteries can spike up to 4.4v

I personally have an Ultrafire, cost about £30 including RIS mount, pressure pad and batteries. Rated at 320 lumens and is very bright and lights up objects from an impressive distance.

It does go through batteries quicker than I'd like, however.

I quite like my SMK TACTLED which came with scope mounts, pressure pad and rail. Seems really bright and has a very good range.
