G&P M4s?
3 February, 2010, 22:56
In a thread a couple of days ago, where someone was asking for people's opinions of various makes of gun for a newbie, a few comments were made along the lines of G&P aren't good as first guns, as they need a lot of work.
What's wrong with G&P, or was this an over-simplification?
I'm shifting most of my guns, so I can buy 1 good M4 and I've seen a G&P I really like. But, I want something that I can simply use, clean, put away and then use again. I'm fed up with having to do ongoing maintenance to keep guns running.
I know what guns there are out there, so TM am bestest guns will be a completely wasted post. I'd like to know what people who use, or know people who use G&P really think of them.
Thanks guys
Robin

Re: G&P M4s?
Hey,
My First Gun was a CAM15A4 RIS with sliding stock. Bought it around 2006 i think. Ive absolutely battered this thing. Used to run round on weekends with a 5k box mag on it. It had a systema M100 on arrival, and all its ever had changed is the gear on the motor.Thats it.
I even chopped the back end where the stock tube goes on to fit a para stock on, and i still have no problems with it.very solid, very reliable!
hope that helps!

Re: G&P M4s?
My G&P M4-based Diemaco performs brilliantly. So well in fact, it's the only AEG I own which I trust to get good kills every time on semi.
I also have a G&P M16A1 which kicks some. Suffice to say, they've picked up their game in recent years in the quality dept...

Re: G&P M4s?
Early G&P's had chronic tappet plate failures. sub 1000 rounds or even sub 100 rounds.
Spur gear axles tend to fail (even on current ones).
Shimming can be tight - even now and gearboxes can sound screechy.
Low amount of grease/lube in them from new.
The last two I've had (i.e owned in the last 2 months) have been ok - one took a fair bit of work to sound smooth though and it's mainspring was phenomenally weak. The other 3 I have had through my hands for servicing recently were ok for 2, the third one had a spur gear failure again and required de shimming and lubrication.
I'd rate them as acceptable for internals and very good for externals.

Re: G&P M4s?
I love my G&Ps, theyre by far the nicest of my guns externally, and not half bad intenerally. I would replace the hop though, theyre not the best. But generally theyre awesome guns.

Re: G&P M4s?
My G&P SR16 URX is great. It feels nice and heavy and looks the business.
It performs well, although there are higher and lower ROFs between guns. i.e - my mate's G&P is higher than mine :/
The hop up isn't as stunning as TM, but it does the job. So far mine has required no maintainance or stripping. Simple gun for a simple guy.

Re: G&P M4s?
Been finding weak springs (~250fps) in the latest few I've been working on. Spur gear axels aren't great as said. Hops are pretty terrible though, and will need replacing.
Apart from that, pretty rock solid. Very nice externals and with a good reshim and cleanup inside they can be made into very reliable skirmish tools.

Is that the hop rubber or whole hop unit?

Re: G&P M4s?
Definately the rubber/nub. The hop units are in my experience skirmishable, but they're not exactly expensive to replace and you'll notice the performance difference if you do.
I've just replaced a hopup unit in waltzinblack's M4. The one that came out looked like a G&P unit with TM rubber and nub. It wasn't feeding well at all and robbed the gun of a good 130fps when set. Traded it out for a Systema unit and all problems solved, with very nice performance on top (this is still with the TM rubbers).

I had a G&P m16, but i'm assuming they're identical inside...
I had to do a little work on it before It became 'useable'.
Problems I had:
Slow ROF
Semi auto issues
Motor smoking - yea!
First job was an m100, but upon opening the mechbox, you realise how much sh*t is inside. The gearbox needed a seriouse de-gunk.
Once I cleaned the gearbox reasonably well, put the gears back in, re -shimmed, new spring in the gun it ran alot smoother. ROF improved dramatically, motor was working just fine. Even semi was fixed for some reason.
The hopup was terrible, and when I replaced it, you could see how poorley made it was. Incredibly thin, flimsy, and all chewed up.
So in short, out of the box, you'll need to sort out the hop & spring, and then a serious de- gunk. (Same as any gun really! )
Apart from that, they've got excellent internals. Just need a little care & attention first
