  • Full Face Protection- whats your oppinion?

I know this thread has most likely been asked many times before, but this issue recently came under discussion at a local site. And sadly- come the end we lost out on using the site.

So this made me wonder what is the view of the general airsoft community on full face protection.
    So what are your views?

I can be restricting, un-comfortable and gets too damn hot! imo
Well i use it for CQB, but that's only because we have to.

For woodland I just glasses and keep my head down!

I think that its a good idea, but i can understand why people want to opt for just glasses or googles. The eye is the only part of the body that can be really destroyed while playing airsoft, youve got to be careful. We only have one real safety rule in airsoft that is unanimous between all sites, and thats eye protection. In the end i can see why people who wear glasses do, and go knows I agree with them, after using full face for 2 and half years. However i would expect to sympathy if i were to loose a tooth or what not, as ive made that choice. In my opinion, your eye is the only part of the body in airsoft you have to protect, so aslong as your eyes are well protected, thats good enough for me

I think that full face should be compulsory up to the age of 18. After you're 18 you're your own responsibility. Anyone under 18 should technically be being supervised. Of course Eye protection would be absolutely compulsory to 18+. If someone over 18 loses a tooth then it's their responsibility.

It's a pain, but i'd rather have it than loose teeth! I know it doesn't happen a lot, but there's always a chance, and I just don't want to risk it.

I use the lower half of those sensei mesh masks, just take the upper part off, take the elastic strap off, transfer it to the lower half and you're done. Be sure to put some of the foam that comes with it on the nose piece as it will dig into the bridge of your nose =]

Any form of eye protection is acceptable to me, depends on how concious or worried you are

                I find it very restricting.
With glasses I can see all that is going on around me and I play better.
When playing CQB I user my custom made lower face mask.

                  If you don't mind:
                  • Having bleeding welts all over your face
                  • Swalling the odd (or many) BBs
                  • Risking your tooth shot out
                  • The pain on your face especially on a cold day
Then use good quality ballistic glasses with good side protection otherwise go full face.

Some site insurance may stipulate full face protection for certain age groups. It might even be possible that a site owner is getting a better insurance rate based on a policy condition that all players wear full face.

I never wear full face and have had 'pox' like welts all over my face after CQB but I never complain because I know the score (or not as it may have turned out).

I'm almost 17 and I feel I'm mature and responsible enough to make the decision on whether to wear a full face mask or not. One of the reasons I find airsoft so much better than paintball is the fact that I don't have to wear a full face mask (among plenty of other things of course).

The only rule there should be regarding protection is of course safety goggles and thats pretty much a fixed rule anyway.

I see a lot of facial injuries most are only temporary , some will leave scars , but dental ones are permanent . sometimes bbs get behind glasses so i think its only a matter of time berfore an eye is lost even with shooting glasses , pity the regulars use glasses i think it sets bad example - as you can guess i use a mask

True. I know of one case where the site owner/player go a BB in the eye from a sideways head shot- the bb just snuck behind the lens. It had lost much of it's energy (probably by bouncing on his face and lens/glass frame before hitting his eye) and so just caused pain and discomfort for a good half hour but thats all. That's why I suggested in my earlier post to get glasses with good side protection. Glasses that wrap around are one ones to consider.

On the other hand I've also witnessed BB shatter through mesh full face protection. That was more serious because nasty little white fragments got into the eye and so the victom had to be driven home spent a hours rinsing his eyes out. Once again, the BB had lost most of it's energy and so did not cause any damage- just major discomfort.

When we play this sport we take on board risks. We can never mitigate 100%- that's an impossibility. All we can do is take the best possible measures to contain the risk of eye damage.
