PayPal customer service rep in incorrect info shocker!
Except it's not a shock at all. I've never come across such a bunch of incompetent sloping shouldered cretins as inhabit PayPal's customer service department.

Call me stupid but how do Paypal know its airsoft. Two people send money. Unless you put "Here's the the money for the rifle" in the comments box or something like that how will they know??

They wouldn't need to if you were daft enough to put 'rifle' in the description

The problem is not so much with buying or selling a RIF per se, but occurs when a problem arises. If I buy a gun from you and it doesn't turn up, is broken, etc. and I complain to PayPal and start a dispute, all you have to say in your response to my complaint is 'airsoft' and they won't care any more.

I really see no need to EVER resort to paying by gift, I mean, unless you really are bad at maths and can't use a calculator......all the seller has to do is bake the fees into the purchase price. So for example; you want to end up with £250 for your gun, you advertise at £259.01. Even if the price is negotiated down, the seller continues to consider the fees value in his/her price reduction.
Simple. Retailers have been baking the cost of doing business into the piece price for centuries.
Therein lies the variable, negotiation. When you pay by gift the seller benefits from receiving the most value for their items and the buyer is happy cause they've knocked the price down. This is a better arrangement than the seller knocking 'x' amount from the price for Paypal to then leach another 6% off you for a service they won't even deliver on.

Another reason to call bullshit on this is ebay. There are many shops on ebay sellings 1000s of airsoft items with the only real way to pay via Paypal.

Re: PayPal have now banned any & all airsoft related payment!
PayPal policy seems to almost change from day to day in terms of the person you reach on the other side of the phone. Their representatives either don't know or aren't up to date with policy, which is odd as I would have guessed they would be the kind of company that has them quote policy directly off their computer screen. To combat this, after being promised something on the phone, I take down the time, date, name of the rep and call reference number (when possible), and when I know it's going to be something I definitely want a record of, I'll hit the little record app on my phone. If a representative of a company promises you something out of policy and you can prove it, 9 times out of 10 the company will give you what was promised or do something out of their policy to make up for it (it doesn't need to go too far up the chain for this to happen)...
So my advice; call PayPal and ask a customer service agent if you are allowed to use PayPal for an RIF purchase or sale. Record the conversation, and if you get a yes, then go ahead. If something does happen and they try and tell you it's against policy, just send them the file of the conversation. I would be pretty confident that if it came down to it, they would just pay for the mistake out of their own pocket.
p.s. to the post above. Despite the sale of 1000's of airsoft products, eBay does not actually permit the sale of any airsoft replica parts, and ask the eBay community to report any such sales. I know this because I tried to sell parts, got my auction closed, tried to argue it with the classic "everyone else is doing it" and was met with "but everyone else shouldn't be doing it".
