Re: ares m249 quality
For the same amount of money roughly go with a classic army they are solid performers, will take the Cheaper A&K box mags too. you are right Ares have had a few bad reviews about their 249's. mainstream though Classic army

Re: ares m249 quality
Look around for a second hand CA or A&K that's been sorted.

I own an a&k 249mk2 and it is a cracking piece of kit! Good quality parts, well put togethe and the gearbox fires at a cracking rate on a 9.6v! Bloody heavy though!

If i remember right there's a hell of a lot of plastic on them and they break easily.

Re: ares m249 quality
The Ares (read STAR) M249 is awesome when it works but suffers from a weak gearbox surround made of plastic (yes in a support gun!!) and the general furnishings as well which can break especially cocking handles and triggers which can be replaced but are still bad design.
I had the STAR one for 4 months used it for about 4 days and the rest of the time it was being fixed or modded so it did not break as easy.
I have checked with a friend whose company stocks the Ares and he confirmed it was the same as the STAR, as has been said go for a second hand A&K or classic army.
