R-Hop & Tightbore VS F-hop and Widebore THOUGHTS? What are you running?
12 May, 2016, 18:50
Following on from my last post about my upgraded SRC M4 and a lengthy and informative post by a fellow member, I was curious about things and started digging into the cavernous world of airsoft AEG performance and upgrades. I was always under the impression, rather wrong I shall admit, that to gain accuracy and range your FPS needed to be higher! This I assumed merely from the fact I thought a sniper has a higher FPS and thus can achieve greater range. It has only become apparent to me recently that this is NOT the case and that the key to accuracy and range is in fact the Hop-Up unit and bucking/nub combo.
So, I looked into Flat hopping and the difference this made. I came across a lot of info on the benefits of flat hopping and the improved distance it gives you. What I found was evidence that widebore barrels are better than tightbore due to the reduced friction created on the BB travelling down the barrel. In addition, a flat hop like a prometheus purple bucking with a Firefly Namazu nub on a 6.23mm inner barrel apparently gave better results than an r-hop and 6.01 tightbore!
So........what are peoples thoughts on the matter, what do you run in your gun??
This post is open to discussion and it would be good to see what people run and their thoughts.....but please do not start to argue with other's choices should you disagree with them :-)
cheers

Yes eagerly awaiting peoples thoughts on this one, i'm trying to do a DMR setup for distance on a G36, and thought tightbore was better etc.. as in your description, but also discovered not quite the case, so I have been looking at ally hop up units like the AirsoftPro or Prowin units.

Re: R-Hop & Tightbore VS F-hop and Widebore THOUGHTS? What are you running?
Widebore VS Tightbore has been done 101 times here, there, and everywhere.
Theres far to many things to consider:
Barrel quality, both bore and consistency
Hop unit
Hop nub
Hop bucking (even with an rhop, a bucking is still used to seal)
Quality of ammo
Air volume/Cylinder ratio
This list goes on and on....
Simply put, they both have merits, but it's entirely dependent on your set up.
Some common points/notes:
Widebore in an AEG will have worse results than in HPA.
6.08 barrel could out range a 6.01 and a 6.23 using the same setup........if the barrel quality and consistency is great enough.
HPA usually has more air, so people use widebore, but you end up using more air.
You have barrels such as Tanio Koba which r hopped on a sub 330 fps gun will out range a lot of other set ups
Again theres a 101 points for and against each type of barrel and hop mod.

Fully aware that there a hell of a lot of variants which could determine range etc, I started the thread as a point of discussion to see what people are running and their effective range.
I'm running:
SHS M120 Gearbox
PROWIN Hop up
Madbull 60 degree shark Hop bucking
JBU 6.01 550mm tightbore barrel
Getting roughly 65m effective range. (measured on google maps, so not accurate)

And there lies one of the biggest problems when Airsofters discuss range. Most of the time it's estimated, and never actually measured, and that's before we get into discussions regarding conditions on the day, etc

Re: R-Hop & Tightbore VS F-hop and Widebore THOUGHTS? What are you running?
I take all of this with a pinch of salt, with the right barrel/hop combination, and without doing any of these fancy mods you can still reach out get 50m fairly comfortably with a well set up 350FPS AEG.
I'd love for someone to come down to the range on Sunday at GZ, let me chrono their gun with 0.2s and show me their rifle has a serious range advantage, i've genuinely never seen an R-Hopped rifle reaching 250+ft at 350fps.
I have a ICS MP5 with a stock Hop Unit,
6.05 PDI barrel and W-Hold Hop up,
Ultimate Gearbox at 330fps, it reaches around 50m before any serious drop off.

I was told by a fairly well respected recoil tech that R-hops need ammo of 0.3 and above to get the best out of them

There was quite a heated exchange on the ASF FB group this week with a lad claiming his field legal AEG will easily reach 250ft accurately and "easily". He's going to film it, with chrono etc this Sunday. We await not seeing the results...
Folks are usually in fantasy land when it comes to range.
There is only so much spin you can put on a pellet. If you put anymore it over hops. It doesn't matter if you have a magic R hop or not, a BB can only have so much lift before it bananas up in the air.
A lot of extra range comes from using heavier pellets, the better hop allows these extra heavy pellets to fly, and if used in HPA guns this results in joule creep. Many HPA guns are not field legal if they are chronoed on .2 pellets pushed to 350fps.
If you can hit 50m sub 350fps you're doing very well.
I've had 65m tags in game on film, shooting downhill with a 310fps MK23 pistol. Usual range is 55m. That's using .45 pellets. It's physically impossible to get much further than that sub 350fps. But please, somebody prove me wrong and record it on film.

Re: R-Hop & Tightbore VS F-hop and Widebore THOUGHTS? What are you running?
Exactly, the laws of physics makes it impossible for a bb of a certain weight to go a certain distance with a flatish trajectory using sub 350fps, to increase the range you increase the hop, to keep it flat you increase the weight, to get it there quick enough to defy gravity you increase the fps, then it becomes either illegal or a designated dmr/sniper rifle
